I am on novomix 30. I was in hospital back in August with DKA. I have regularly taken my insulin ever since. I have a question to ask I inject twice a day at breakfast and tea. On some days I have eaten either a late lunch or a big roast lunch nad therefore I dont want any tea. What can I do about my insulin as I have to eat when ive taken it.

Hi im on Novamix 30 and take 2 times a day also, I asked this very question in hospital today funny enough (well about the late tea as I work shifts)

They said as the usual thing is inject > eat tea > bedtime snack... as you will know, they just said if I eat late/go out for a meal (i wish, chinese would be nice) then to just have a snack the usual time then the jab with the meal out for example and that should keep you going (but I still will test before bed and snack if needed, might have a prawn cracker left even!)

However I better point out im very new to this but I am just sharing what I was told as we in the same situation with meds. But my eating habbits wouldnt put my mealtimes out more than a couple of hours, my nurse said if it is too over the place a different insulin may be needed for me but shouldnt be needed I hope.

Your big dinner and no food later part of the question im sorry I dont know, but id like the answer for it also. but from what I was ran through at hospital today it dosnt sound like the Novamix is made for a varied schedual of eating and should be a 3 meals a day sort of thing, get a doggy bag! haha take home half of your roast :roll:

Hi, I've been on Novamix 30 for over 2.5yrs & I've always done the;

<inject> breakfast... lunch... <inject> dinner/tea... supper.

I've never deviated by skipping anything or having the meals to early /late just because I've just never wanted to botch things up unnecessarily. Obviously, these routine mealtimes can be far too inflexible for many people, so it may be worth thinking about the basal/bolus regime.

Point is, you can't just skip your tea, because obviously you need to inject, so you will need to eat something. You could maybe just have something light if you've had a big lunch, but do keep an eye on your BG levels after any "big (carby?) lunches" that you're not going to high afterwards, because even though you will need carb to sustain your levels until teatime, you still don't want to go overboard as you're not taking any insulin at that time. I normally test 2-3hrs after lunch to see if I need a mid-afternoon snack or not.

i really didnt get on with novomix 30 as i had to eat/inject at certain times, basal bolus has worked so much better for me

Maybe you could try switching to MDI/ basal-bolus regime? I was on 2 injections of a mix for years and couldn't control my BG because I couldn't stick to a routine of same amount of carbs at the same time every day.

MDI is much more flexible and your day is never dictated by your insulin. You decide what and when to eat then inject accordingly. Worth a try. I don't think the 2x regime gives you the option of missing a meal really.

Thanx, I have had a follow up appt today following a bout of DKA back in Aug. She suggested I go back to injecting up to 4 times a day. i changed this b4 because I found the injections painful and I was sick of seeing bruises everywhere I injected. She said injecting 4 times a day im able to skip meals if I want and it will be easier for when I go back to work.
