I went on a low cal and low carb diet about five weeks ago after talking to my GP. went fantastically at first. My blood sugars came right down to the 5’s. After two weeks I had lost @ 10% weight so stopped the low cal part. I’ve tested regularly so any grains are bad for my sugars with large spikes so continued with low carb. Once my sugars were into 4’s I reduced meds (metformin slow release and Canagliflozin) and eventually stopped as all seemed fine and HbA1C was estimated at 33.

However past few days my sugars have shot up again. Put first day down to a bad nights sleep but it’s continuing with readings in 8’s to 10’s. I started back on metformin yesterday in case it was that.

Anyone else experiencing this. Still low carb (keep it to 40grams or less) with plenty of protein, fats and veggies, yoghurt and berries as my only fruit. Is this just a blip. A hormonal thromby? Or were my original readings more down to low cal than low carb. I know I will need to see doc if it continues. Been so pleased with progress.

You seem to be doing everything right, so don’t worry too much, it’s very early days for you.

Maybe a good thing to go back on the Metformin if you can tolerate it as although it doesn’t do much work on actual reducing blood sugar it’s roll is to reduce liver dumps or dawn phenomenon (which happens anytime not just in the morning) this could be what’s happening to you with you seeing the slight rise in numbers. I notice a rise in numbers if I don’t take my metformin for a few days (if I get a ducky tummy or something)

The other thing could be that you are sickening for something such as a cold, or a low level infection, you are right that it could be the sleep, even after a few days. Lots of things play a part in our blood sugar levels, it could be hormones- mine went a bit crazy in the beginning of my menopause.

Keep doing what you are doing and you do have a little bit of room to drop carbs further if you wish to. I doubt very much it’s anything to do with calories- calories have no bearing on blood sugar whatsoever
