Hi my names elena i am 23 yrs old and have had type 1 diabetes for 6yrs. You'd think i'd of learnt all i need to know about diabetes and have it well under control by now, but thats not the case.

Last february i found out that if i cut my insuline doses down and eventually cut them out i could lose weight fast not realising the effect it would have on my health. I was admitted to hospital and 2 wks later i was finally released, however hard i tried i couldn't help seeing the weight creep back on so i managed to slip back into my old ways again and ended up in hospital for the 2nd time at the begining of april this year.

I'm not sure how to keep a balance with the food i eat and administering the right doses of insuline as the more i eat the more i inject the more i can see myself getting bigger. I really need help from people who are in the same situation as me as everyone around me has no idea what i'm going through.

Firstly you need to contact your DSN

And have a good chat about your control including the avoiding taking insulin to prevent weight gain, to be embarressed about dicussing any aspect of your control, your team won't judge you all they interested in is giving you the help and support that you require, and they would have come across many a diabetic in your pardicment..

And it's all about learning carb counting and how to take into consideration other factors that all go to helping us to calculate our insulin dose, so we balance our food needs and insulin needs, so we don't end up feeding excess insulin to prevent hypo's then pay with gaining weight!

Most diabetics do rebel in one way or another at some point of time it's a normal human reaction.. After all it's probably the first time that we've faced anything that we have no choice about nor can we change if the going gets tough we can't stick it on the back burner for another time or decided nah it aint for us etc... And sometimes we've just got to prove that we can't run, hide or put it on the back burner for another day..

One of the hardest parts of getting back on track, as this is quite intensive, as need to make as many notes such as food eaten, dosage used, BG, exercise taken whether you ill, stressed etc but this will give you a very good picture to what is going on and what adjustments you need to make to maintain control.. Once you've up and runing you don't have to be so intense with the dairy, but just maintain the BG routine so keep control, and this routine soon becomes a false of habit just like dressing, picking up your door keys on the way out the door!

Hi, Elena.
Welcome, I'm sorry that you've been having problems.
Insulin given to 'cover' the right amount of carbs for you and your activity level doesn't make you fat.
Learning to count your carbs isn't that difficult, though sometimes it takes a while to sort out the right amounts of basal and bolus insulin. You might like to talk to your DSN about going on A DAFNE or similar type course. Most people who have been on these courses have found them a great help. There is an online course which I can find the details of, but i'm sure it is better to do the course with others.
People on here will always help you with day to day questions and we have quite a few members who have turned their control around.
Meanwhile if you feel you need help from people who understand, there is an organisation called DWED. They are a newly registered charity run by people who have recovered from similar problems to your own.
