I currently have flu, today I feel like I could eat everything insight. I have had flu for 3 days now and it's quite bad i've asthma as well. The last two days I have eaten about 1000 calories and have stuck to eating healthly. I gain 2 pounds. I have had a pizza today for lunch and I still don't feel like i have ate anything.I had surgery last tuesday so I'm trying my best to eat when I can, as I'm taking steriods 6 times a day(not inhaler) and antibotics. I see the d. nurse on friday. how do you cope when you're unwell with diabetic.should I be doing more and what can I do?

Hi. Just a brief reply. Often your blood sugar will rise during illness so don't be surprised if any meter readings go higher. I would continue to have a diet similar to that you normally have where you can. Pizza is a bit high carb but having it occasionally or if it will help you feel a bit better then fine. Try to eat more of the non-carby things where possibly to help satisfy your hunger. There isn't really any need to change your normal regime due to illness.

Oh my goodness ... the steroids ... they make me ravenously hungry too. My father used to take them regularly and he was scarily hungry on them. But until I was put on them myself I didn't really understand the absolute URGENCY to get to food. I was on a course of oral steroids last year and I honestly thought I might kill anyone who got between me and the fridge! It feels like they awaken the hunter gatherer in us, I became Neanderthal Woman in a matter of hours.

All I can say is try to eat plenty of meat and veg, maybe a huge pan of minced beef with veg could be made up and kept on hand, rather than the carby pizzas.

I hope you're feeling better very soon.

thanks for the replies, I'm trying to eat healthy, I take my ventolin about 6-8 times a day plus the steriod drops in my eyes six times a day. I know this will turn into a chest infection needing prediszone and oral antibotics instead of a drop version I'm currently taking. I will just do my best to have protein, protein and more protein. I had a soya yogurt and a pear for breakfast so far today, fingers cross, I don't get the munchies. check my sugar after 2 hours 7.4
