Hi
When I was pregnant with my second child I was found to have gestational diabetes when I was 28 weeks. I was injecting insulin 4 times a day. Once the baby was born at the six week review it seemed to have corrected itself. Now a year on I've started to experience some concerning symptoms again such as dry mouth/throat, increased hunger, and increased need to go to the toilet as well as extreme tiredness. I have been to the doctors and had the Hab1c test and this has come back as 6.1so the doctors are not concerned and don't think there is anything wrong with me. I feel they haven't taken my concerns seriously. I have read the nice guidelines and understand that the cut off point is 6.5. I was wondering if you could advise me and should I be concerned or just accept what the doctors say? Your help and advice would be gladly received

Hi Saracos,

Sorry to hear that the Doctor has dismissed your concerns, I think you are right to be concerned. Your sugars are a bit high, and I think if you didn't make any changes you could proceed onto diabetes. My advice would be to reduce the carbohydrates that you eat and see if that makes your symptoms ease at all. What I mean by this is reduce the bread, potatoes, pasta and rice and flour based products that you eat by half, and if you can switch to brown versions of these all the better. Don't go hungry, replace these carbs with vegetables and good quality protein. Try to reduce things like chicken nuggets, cheap sausages, fish fingers, pizzas etc - all this breading and fillers in the sausages are very high in carbs.

I am sure you will start to feel better if you can make these changes - I know this is hard with a young family, but there are loads of low carb recipes on this site to give you inspiration and ideas. Please ask if you have any questions. Cheers Jane
