I have been on a low carb diet for the past 14months and have lost a total of 16lbs in that time.
Before that I was on a calorie count diet starting at 226lbs and lost 30lbs from April 2010 to the December but then stalled so that's why I decided to try the low carb which is going very well and I have been declared a "non" diabetic on my last check up.

Wish I could stick to a low carb diet! What kind of foods do you eat? I dont really like salads etc :/

i really struggled to lose weight after having my son a year ago. I tried LCHF and felt rubbish, i put on weight, my skin went awful, i felt sluggish. I then joined Rosemary Conley and basically now do a very balanced diet of LCLF. Since October I have lost 2 1/2 stone, I exercise every day on gym equipment at home. I don't understand how high fat can be good for you long term. Doesn't fat cause heart disease? I just wanted to be healthy. And for me healthy is a balanced diet.
i changed everything, including portion sizes and i feel great. I inject 10 units of insulatard of a night, and 1-2 units of novarapid with my meals.
i think the most important thing is to do what helps you. I sometimes feel, and i really do not mean this disrespectful to anyone, that LCHF is pushed down your throat (excuse the pun lol) on this site like it is the ONLY thing that works, i am sorry but for me it didn't. Find what works for you and your diabetes. Isn't it all trial and error in life anyway?
i wish you all the best in your weight loss

The kinds of fat that are dangerous to your heart are most of the vegetable unsaturated ones. Low fat diets can cause heart disease. There was a recent study I think they had to stop as so many died, but I may have got that wrong. I will try to find a link.

What does cause heart disease is sugar, study published the other day, while they haven't been able to prove fat as such is bad, not even butter and other saturated fats. Quite the contrary, milk seems to prevent heart disease.

But I am not eating low fat to the point it is dangerous for me. What I am doing is eating a healthy balanced diet. I am sorry but for me, and my consultant at the hospital, my results speak for themselves.

i had my bloods taken and the results came back. My hba1c was 5.2. My consultant wrote on my notes 'beyond excellent control'.

we are told our meter readings don't lie and are the way forward to gaining good control. Well mine is never above 5.4.

that is good enough for me, and my body, and my health.

I am very happy it works so well for you. My only concern is where you get the energy from if you do both low carb AND low fat. The only remaining macro nutrient left is protein. A high intake of protein can long-term cause damage to your kidneys and cause high bg short term.

I try to get 10-20% energy from carbs, 10% from protein and the rest from fat. That means around 70-80% of my energy intake is from fat, so I can eat about 175-200 grams of fat per day.

how many grams of carbs do you eat a day? I ask because your version of low carb is probably extremely different to mine! I aim to eat no more than 100g a day. And that sustains me enough to lead the busy life i do with two small children. With the exercise i do, one hour a day, plus a very big hill walk twice a day, and the odd ten mins on the exercise bike when i fancy it throughout the day.

with regard to your worries, the moment my blood results show such concerns i will worry, until then, with no disrespect, i will continue to do what i am doing because its working for me. As i have said the meter never lies, along with the scales, how i feel and how i am now beginning to finally look.

So, you must on about 2250 calories a day, with 80% or 1800 calories from fat at 200g.
And you only eat 55g of carbs, and also 55g of protein a day.

Yet you claim you like your own mutton? But limit your entire protein input to 55g a day? Before you include protein from any other source.

I would like to see the link to the study where the actual participants died before any harmful effect was noticed, I do hope you find the link,
Also, the proof unsaturated fats, especially olive oil is bad for your heart would be interesting to see.
Interestingly, you still only claim to eat the standard amount of calories that is around the average for the day, but don't consider you limit your eating?
It still looks like you portion control, and don't seem to pile in excessive calories though, so it's still a portion controlled diet you are on, even by accident.

Until then, I doubt I'll be living of an 80% (saturated) fat diet, I'll settle for good health from a portion controlled balanced diet.

But you could post the proof to help convince me I'm wrong.
I'm not having a go at you, just helping you clarify what you eat, and the amount, for the op, as it's a lot clearer when the full diet is actually written out.

Do see to that they check you kidneys regularly if you eat a lot of protein. Diabetes is bad enough on them.
I used to stay below 100gr of carbs for the last few years except for Sundays, when had whatever I liked. Now I keep it below 50, preferably below 30 and some days even lower, depends on what I have at hand to cook from, mostly our own stuff. I check my bg to see what different foods do to my bg. Sundays are a lot stricter now. I have also gone grain free for the time being.

Yes you are right Douglas, I probably go a bit higher on protein, particularly now when I try be a bit more strict on carbs than I have been lately. Still, I keep the fat content in my diet high.

Did I ever say olive oil was particularly bad? That must have been a typo, sorry. There is no dispute whatsoever over olive oil, it is good. Most of the other vegetable oils trigger inflammatory processes so should be avoided. I use a lot of olive oil. I also have a range of vegetable oils at hand when needed but olive oil and coconut oil are my main choices along with butter and other animal fats.

I keep the carb content down but eat as much as I like. I get hungry before meals, then I eat until I feel full and stop eating. Very simple. Eat when you are hungry until you are satiated, then stop. 4-6 later I get hungry again. I am no great fan of early breakfast so only have coffee in the morning. I might have late snack, usually nuts now.

I want my bg to stay on what used to be normal for me as in fbg around 4 and after meals below 6 if I can, that is.

I will look for the link.

You did.

"The kinds of fat that are dangerous to your heart are most of the vegetable unsaturated ones"

Olive oil is 85% unsaturated.
Coconut oil is 92% saturated.

I would hope as a diabetic my kidneys would be checked regularly anyway without the need for my diabetic team to be reminded to do so by myself? And I do not believe my diet is dangerously high in protein.

This is no disrespect but this is a complicated enough disease without one type of diet being forced down our throats like it is our savior. It is not in my opinion.

my nan was type 1, she died 5 years ago without ever having a hold on it. She ate rubbish and died of heart disease. She always ate high fat, high carb food, but as she was only diagnosed in her late 60s probably felt it was too late to change.

my uncle is also type 1, follows a low carb diet, and is very poorly at the moment, his one kidney is failing, his other under alot of pressure due to this. He takes countless medications and has already had a minor heart attack.

no diet is going to cure us or be perfect for all of us. What i hope is i continue to live a healthy a life as possible, in a way that suits me, for as long as possible. My way doesnt suit you, that's fine, but please respect it suits me.

The amount of calories to eat are different for each person. It depends on your weight and height, and how much you want to lose.

Go to myfitnesspal.com for the right calculator for that. Then, if you're serious and want an awesome program created for women that is guaranteed to work go to http://inshapenow.net.

This is the program I'm doing. It has the right exercises, food and calories you need to succeed.

PLUS there is a community of women that have done the program and have succeeded to support you. And those in it right now. I'm using it to lose weight then maintain.
