Hi all. I've had some recent health issues and was out onto medication which made my blood sugars high, I've stopped taking it a few weeks ago but still running high. Getting fasting of 7.6 up to 13. I'm not on any diabetes medication as I've been diet controlled til now. Low carb had kept my numbers low but I wasn't losing any, weight so I've recently started 5:2 and the weight is coming off. These high numbers are scaring me though, other than starting medication how else do I get them down?

Sorry you are having problems with your fasting levels.
What sort of levels are you seeing during the day, and at bedtime?

If you are still on a low carb diet on the 5-2 and those numbers aren't improving, then it sounds to me like you need to see your GP with a view to some medication. If you are allowing yourself more carbs, then maybe a tweak of the diet? What sort of rises are you getting from before a meal to after the meal? Are those rises creeping up?

When I was first diagnosed I went on a strict Healthy Diet (Anthony Worrall-Thompson/Diabetes UK). I lost 2 stone very quickly and went right down to 5. I've read since that there's a theory that rapid weight loss can halt diabetes. Not sure that this is entirely accurate but the principle of food balancing can't go wrong in itself. When this stops doing the trick it's probably time to talk it through with a doctor. Hope you sort it soon
