Hi, my mum has had Type 1 diabetes for the best part of 30 years. Whilst she is able to manage it reasonably well, she has hypoglycemic unawareness.

Until recently she has been cared for by my dad however he has now passed away. Myself and my brothers either live/work some distance away and so are concerned about her long term care arrangements. We're about to make an appointment to discuss mums situation with the diabetic nurse however was wondering if anyone had any advice/pointers before hand? Mum is hoping to stay out of warden control care for as long as possible.

I've heard of aids such as insulin pumps/ assistance dogs and monitors which continually monitor blood sugar and sends out an alert but am I right in thinking that these are unavailable on the NHS? If anybody has had any experience / knowledge of these, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm not in the UK or a T1 diabetic, and I'm sure those who are, will have helpful comments for you.

From what I have read on the forums, continuous blood glucose monitors and insulin pumps are available on the NHS for eligible people. They seem to be helpful for a range of reasons, including just having smoother insulin levels over a 24 hour period. Good luck.
