False, patronising people who assume they know everything about me!
Hi guys! I am T2 and my last HbA1c was 8. Since then I have totally chnged my diet, stopped Gliclazide and Sitagliptin, increased Metformin and I have so far lost 2 and a half stone. My BMs now range between 4.3 and 6. My consultant has suggested I start taking Canagliflozin 100mg a day but I'm not sure I need it! Also I don't know if I'm willing to accept the side effects! Urinary tract infections - I get enough of those already - genital thrush, possible heart problems....the list seems endless!! Has anyone tried this yet? Have you experienced any bad side effects? #hoping

I would ask your consultant why he has suggested you start taking Canagliflozin, there may be a good reason. From what you say it sounds unneccessary but there may be good reasons.

It was because my HbA1c had gone up, I was only taking 1 Metformin, now I'm taking 3 a day and the 320mg of Gliclazide was making my weight increase. Also I was eating anything and everything. My evening BMs could go up to 16 or 17. Now they're between 5 and 6.5. I've also been able to halve my Lantus at night!

I would ask him to wait and see what your next HbA1c is. Your normal level BGs will eventually show up that way. I'm very wary of all the diabetes meds except for metformin and insulin, because of what I have read about the benefits, side effects and risks of them at Blood Sugar 101. I think doctors downplay the side effects and risks in their mind because they don't realise low carbing can reduce BGs so well. A doctor can suggest a drug but you don't have to agree to take it if you think it's unnecessary and harmful.

That's what I thought Cat!! After reading the side effects of this tablet I'm not willing to risk them - UTIs, I get enough of them as it is! Genital thrush - no thank you!! A possible increase in heart disease, heart attacks and strokes!!! I feel I'm doing really well with 1500mg Metformin and 80ml of Lantus!! Big change in diet has made a huge difference, and people are now noticing the loss of weight!! So I think I'll wait a bit longer till my next hospital appointment in 6 months time! XX
