Heme Iron and CHD

There's an article on this site that reports on a study alleging a link between Heme Iron, ostensibly from red meat (iirc), and heart disease.

As a low carber I eat a lot of meat as I'm sure others do.

Has this study been debunked?

Thanks for the links.

I think my first reaction is simple - there is no need for a low carb or keto diet to be high in meat, or protein of any kind.
Of course, a lot of low carbers do eat a lot of meat, but it is possible to be a vegetarian low carber, and a vegan low carber, so high quantities of meat are optional.

There are plenty of other food choices available, including more low carb veg, dairy, eggs, and fats.

In addition, large numbers of diabetics are anaemic, so I would suggest that people weigh the risks carefully, since red meat and liver are brilliant at preventing or treating anaemia.

Of course but that doesn't speak as to whether the claim is true

A meta-analysis from 2015 states, "Higher dietary intake of heme iron is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, whereas no association was found between CVD and non-heme iron intake or total iron intake."

Another meta-analysis from 2014 states, " ... heme iron intake was positively related to CHD incidence" (but not CHD mortality).

A further meta-analysis from 2014 states, "This meta-analysis suggests that heme iron intake was associated with an increased risk of CHD."
