hi i'm sophie and have been a type 1 diabetic for eight years now. I'm 16 in September, and for most of my 'diabetic' life i've felt fine. Just recently though i've started to see how it's beginning to affect my life, and would just quite like people to talk to who are in a similar situation to me. Because I was diagnosed at such a young age I didn't really fully comprehend it all then. now it's just starting to catch up with me a bit. I don't really know anyone who's diabetic, who I can talk to, so when I heard about this forum I thought it would be really good for me to be able to talk to people in a similar situation to me :) xox

Hi Sophie :)

I went through a very similar thing at your age (I'm 28 now, and was diagnosed at 7 years old) - it kind of hit home to me exactly what being diabetic meant to my life, and I panicked. I went into denial, which is not a good way to go!
2 years later, I started university and ended up in intensive care for a week with ketoacidosis. I left hospital and started looking after myself a bit better, but "life" soon got in the way again and everything slipped. I was doing ok as far as I was concerned - still walking around, so what was the problem?
Then about a year ago I went to the eye hospital after suffering from a very painful eye for a few days (GP had no clue) and was diagnosed with retinopathy.
NOW I'm looking after myself...! It took a brush with blindness to sort myself out

I guess I just wanted to say that I know exactly what you're going through. It's very hard at 16, but it really is worth looking after yourself, and sticking with it in the long run!

xx
