Hi again. Back again.
I havent had a H1C thingy test for ages. Still under dietician as still underweight. Have you tried to put weight on with a low carb diet lol?
I wondered how often I should be having that test as GPs arent mentioning it at all. Perhaps cos I got myself to high 30's in last two results. Thing is we all know that can change and go up just as fast as it can go down.
Pressurised by family to 'for Gods sake have a bit of pasta or rice..or a piece of cake'!
Must admit I hate this damned LCHF diet now. Fed up of seeing same veg every day. Cant stand 80% cocoa solid choc any more. Fed up of watching people eating roast spuds and puddings.

I heard they might be near a pill treatment to divert the glucose work to the intestine. Bring it on cos then I just might go for a few more carbs and hopefully at least a half stone increase in weight.

What are you weighing these days SJC, and what does that mean in BMI terms?

I know how tricky gaining weight can be. I struggle with the balance myself at the moment, but I don't want to focus on me. :)

I would suggest you ask for a test. I imagine, as pre-diabetic or lower, you will only routinely be tested once a year. I doubt a request would be declined though.

I find these days, being ultra-trim, I can eat a few more carbs without concern, and maybe if you are bored of things as they are, you could consider a few additional carbs? I'm not suggesting you ditch low carb, but maybe add a roastie with a Sunday lunch or the odd spoonful of rice - whatever feels best. Clearly you would need to be testing around any changes.

Hi.
Thanks. I havent been testing at all for ages. I got really hung up on it and was already really stressed out so I figured I'd leave it out for a while. In fact, having only one kidney added to my fear and it got where I was scared to test. Crazy isnt it?
I had already lost a stone in weight when I found out I was prediabetic having had three deaths to deal with in about 15 months. Then I went on the LCHF diet and quickly lost one and a half stones. Originally I was about 9st 6. At my lowest I went down to about 6st 13. Since being on calogen and under a dietician I am up to about 7st 6. She wants at least another half stone on me. I am 5ft 4.

She got me to add a tblsp of wholegrain rice to things now and again and to seep some raw jumbo oats in my yoghurt overnight. That appeared to make my H1c go from 37 to 39 in about 4 months. Know thats normal but thats just that tiny adjustment in carbs!

She now wants me to drink a pint of full cream milk a day with a tablespoon of added milk powder in it. Yuck. Cant stand it.

Yes my HbA1c is annual too. Mine is supposed to be in the month of my birthday. I expect they will give you a test if you ask for it.

Lovely to see you here again @SJC :)

Hi Zand. I guess I will ask. You would think the dietician would be keen to know. X

I can understand you wanting to keep your HbA1c down nice and low; I know I want the same for as long as I can.

To be honest, it might be worthwhile doing a bit of testing again - just to see what the oats do to you. I don't know if you ate porridge or oats before when you were testing, but I know many people deal with carbs, generally, a bit later in the day. It's almost like their systems get going as the day goes on.

Annoyingly, not all carbs are equal and some folks, if you recall, react more to some foods than others and we each seem to have something that tends to be like blood sugar rocket fuel. Even more annoyingly is finding out what those personal baddies, or goodies, actually are.

If you don't like the milk alone, could you make a milky coffee with it, or a creamy hot chocolate, with decent quality hot chocolate powder? I don't have it myself, but if that was something you would consider, plenty do drink it. Alternatively, if the milk is just too yucky, you might find cream easier to take in. I know it sounds bonkers, but a dollop of cream in soup or in a stew can just make the sauces silkier and up the calories for your weight?

You and I aren't miles away in terms of size and bulk. I'm 160cm (5' 3") and weight 46-47kg (7st 3-6lbs). I am also very slight, and I imagine you also look in the trouser racks for size 6s? I too skirt the low healthy to underweight thresholds on the BMI scale. I but tend to take the BMI thing as just one factor and guidance that I shouldn't go any lower, rather than an alarm bell should I cross a line marginally.

Personally, I'd be happy anywhere up to around 50kg (a nice round number), but like you, my weight (or lack of it) seems here to stay, for the time being at least. It isn't easy gaining on a mega healthy diet, but I'd rather be wiry and healthy than feel bloated and lethargic just to make the scales read a bigger number.

Nice to see you back. :)

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I get through two medium pots of double cream a week. At least twice a week I have it with cheese added (cheese sauce) and pour it over fish. I also make a decaf cappucino about 3 times a week and add a big dollop of cream to that. I do have some cocoa in that doesnt appear to have any sugar in it. I suppose I could make myself gave a mug of milky cocoa every day too. I promised myself I would only test again if I went back into prediabetic range...well anything above 42. I found myself panicking if my 2h hr post meal reading was above 7.5 and to be honest I dont handle stress well. Nobody had advised me to test. When dietician found out I was testing she too said no need. I explained about how I needed to know which foods and how much affected my levels badly but she even said....
I think.you might find that you have only been in the prediabetic range because you have been through so much physically and mentally.

Not only do I have fibromyalgia but now been diagnosed with ME too so exercise is mostly a no no. Mind you if I exercised I'd probably weigh 6 st in no time at all.

See its different when you a skinny mite! Most who have been overweight are thrilled when their diet change brings about a much lower weight. That alone makes them feel better. I just feel ill. X

With the conditions you have, I would be more inclined to think you may be feeling under the weather due to them, rather than due to being a bit skinny.

I am pleased to say I am fighting fit, and in fact the other day I had to pick up a very heavy box (I'd guess around 30kg - certainly heavier than my airline hold luggage!) and the gentleman I was picking it up from was horrified that I wanted to lift it myself. Well, if I had to deal with it, getting it out of the car, this end, it made sense to ensure I could cope with it? It was fine. I lifted it carefully and although it was very heavy, managed fine.

I know that's no consolation when you're feeling under the weather, but I think what I'm saying is maybe my instinct (and I'm certainly NOT telling you to act as I would) would be to focus on the bigger picture, rather than focus on one thing.

@Brunneria is a luxury hot chocolate sort of gal, so maybe she can tell you what she does with it that might allow you to swap you pint of milk for another pot or two of cream.

:)

Thanks. Oh yes for sure I wouldnt feel well anyway and apparently I have a severe form of fibro/ME. I eat full fat butter, 2- 3 pots Fage yoghurt, nuts and seeds, and those 2 pots cream a week
You imagine 4 or 5 pints full cream milk on top and I eat cheese twice a day! Thats an awful lot of fat. X

These days there's a better understanding of the role of fat in our diets. Unless coupled with carbs, fats don't contribute much to making us fat, or you and I would be bemoaning our waistlines for a different reason.

I subscribe to a few low carb/sugar free websites and recently they're starting to ramp up the puddings - whether it's because it's Easter or coming through to the better weather I don't know. But, most of them have plenty calories, and few carbs. I'll post a couple of links and if you like the sound of them you can always sign up for the emails like I get. There are some great ideas out there.
