Hi my name is Ray
I am 50 and was dignosed with type 1 in mid June when I ended up in hospital after initially being treated for type 2 in May/June 2010. I had heard of Diabetes before but never knowingly had any connection with it so never gave it a second thought, now I suddenly find I have it, ok I thought, lets just get on with it, I have all this support, meeting new people that were all there to make sure I was well and to help me to deal with this, to live with it, (we are so lucky to have the NHS, I cant thank them enough) It was all a bit overwhelming really, so I was'nt taking all this in, but slowly got snippets of information checked out a few websites and began to realise that this is a serious condition with the possibilty of so many complications, although it can be managed succesfully, hopefully reducing the risks.

Now I find that there is so much to learn and take in to take proper control/management of this condition, also I am in the "honeymoon period" just to confuse matters.

So thats how I ended up here, I dont know any other diabetics so cannot talk to anyone who can understand as well as someone who is also dealing with it and to be able to talk to others and read about their experiences/learning.

I know I will have questions so will be back soon, thanks for listening/Reading

Cheers

Ray

Hi Ray and welcome to the forum.
Plenty of Type 1's here who will give you good advice.
Keep the questions coming, they will be answered.

Catherine.

Welcome Ray,
I was a bit older than you when diagnosed, it does come as rather a shock doesn't it ? Over five years later and it's part of my life but in some ways has given me an incentive to lead a healthy lifestyle and the motivation to try to do things I might not have even done before I had it so it's not been a totally negative experience.
Forums can be really useful in learning how to cope with things like adjusting insulin and counting carbs and for support when necessary.
There are lots of experienced people here so fire away!
