I've just been diagnosed with type 2. Had my first tablet (Metformin) about an hour ago.
This is all very new to me right now, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Can anyone recommend any good books, or websites, about diet. Apart from the obvious
chocolate and general sugary stuff I'm a bit confused about carbs, GI etc.

I'm off to have a look around. See you all soon. :mrgreen:

Hello and welcome to the forum, you've come to the right place.

There are a number of good books out there, I'll recommend

Type 2 Diabetes in adults of all ages by Dr. Charles Fox;
Type 2 Diabetes - answers at your fingertips also by Dr. Charles Fox;
Type 2 Diabetes - The First Year by Gretchen Becker.

As for diet, that's a subject and a half. I would start by saying that there isn't a one-size fits all diet for people with diabetes. One of our forum members, Hana, has written an really good thread called Carbs 101 & 102 which can be found here which explains carbohydrates far better than I could.

A good site for a bit more information about GI is The GI Diet and more information about the GI of different foods is The Glycemic Index.

Regards, Tubs.

Hi Godlins

We will help you as much as we can. I am a T2 too.
Firstly, don't get worried if Metformin gives you the "tummy grumbles" It does that to most people, but you adapt to it and it's a good safe medicine.
What was your blood Glucose at diagnosis? Knowing that, we can give you more information

Can anyone recommend any good books, or websites, about diet.
A good website, which is HUGE and will lead you to others is David Mendosa. It's totally comprehensive and David is a lovely guy who will answer specific questions. the only allowance you need to mak for an Americaan is a difference in units. We measure Bloog Glucose (BG) in mmol/lMillimoles per litre. Americans use mg/dl, milligrams per decilitre. the conversion factor is 18 Apart from the obvious
chocolate and general sugary stuff I'm a bit confused about carbs, GI etc.
I'm a low carber. I have lost a lot of weight and still have loads to lose. It's one of the problems of T2 that weight loss is hard work.I wrote a piece called Carbohydrates 101, which is on this forum. You jmight find it helpful. From the dietary point of view, carbs are sugars and starches and best avoided as far as possible. Whatever anyone tells you, wholegrains are NOT healthy and you don't need them.
My most useful book is
Dr. Bernstein's Complete Diabetes Solution. It's Expensive, but comprehensive and not too hard to read.

I don't find Low GI too helpful. I think quite a few of the T1 diabetics do, but for me, I end up with blood sugars above my target, just a lot later.
I also find some useful stuff in the Atkins diabetes book

I'm off to have a look around. See you all soon. :mrgreen:
