Hi, am struggling... :(

I'm new to this forum and am hoping i can get some help and advice. I was diagnosed type 2 several years ago and am on the maximum dose of metformin, and initially I brought my sugars down to around 8 or 9 on fasting tests (though was rather discouraged by my GP's displeasure that I wasn't immediately normal, my initial test was about 27!), but things have gone haywire since. I try to eat a healthy diet, I try to walk every day though regular exercise is sometimes challenging as I have other health issues (IBS, chronic fatigue, seizures) but I don't think that's the only aspect that's not working. I'm morbidly obese (don't you just love that phrase?), tired a lot, and while I'm trying to watch my weight I seem to need to eat so frequently during the day to not feel faint or shivery or have weird feelings in my feet, that I must be doing something wrong. I recently split with my husband and things are lot less stressful, and I'm less depressed than I was, so am more determined than ever to take charge of things but I feel I'm floundering.

I've been under my GPs care, I'm just about to be refered to the hospital clinic instead. I don't feel I've had very good advice - my dietician's main suggestion was not to eat fried foods or lots of red meat and to eat lots of pasta, but when I told her even wholemeal pasta spiked my sugars, she was at a loss as to what people could possibly eat if they didn't live on pasta... *sigh*

I eat low-gi foods, fruit, vegetables, wholegrain bread, avoid fried and processed foods, don't eat cakes or biscuits and keep chocolate to a minimum, and only eat one piece at a time if I really crave it (seems to help stave off the seizure-aura sometimes..). I drink water, and lots of semi-skimmed milk, no red meat.. all the things I think I'm supposed to do but.. help?

I am also Type 2. My mum and dad was too. Mum's rule was always to eat little and often. She would always stop for a cup of tea and a round of wholemeal bread with a light spread of flora on it, at 11:00 am and again at 16:00 pm. She said this is what kept her weight down and her sugar low. I know myself it is not easy but I hope this helps.
 
HI, thanks for that, I do tend to eat a lot of smaller meals, I'm concerned they add up to a lot of food intake across the day though.. wondering if I'm just eating the wrong sorts of things, toast and spread do keep me going nicely, but I can't live on that all day long! I like your mum's advice though.
 
Hey OP, there is a sticky called advice for the newly diagnosed. I know you are not a newbie but it still has some good information .
Do you test your bloods regularly? The general advice seems to be that you must test to find out what foods are spiking your bg. For example, I could not possibly eat your diet, all that bread would fry my meter! :shock:
Otherwise if you have a good old read of the forum and hang about a bit asking questions, I'm sure you'll find some helpful answers.
 
Hi, yes, will go and re-read that sticky I think.. I'm beginning to wonder if I've either had bad advice or not quite understood it, I got the impression bread was a good thing, but I ate differently yesterday and felt a whole lot better so I think I'm going to need to start over... It was nice to have something actually make a differnce for once, definitely going ot look for further tips from helpful folk. And I need to test more, have just got a new meter as my old one was a bit fiddly to use, got no excuses now.

Its just good to feel I'm not alone, so thankyou for replying :)
