Hi - Another newbie!

Hi everyone,

My name is Rita and I was diagnosed today with Type 2 - my bg was 12.5. My doctor was lovely and despite being an hour and 20 minutes behind with his surgery still gave me 30 minutes of his time to explain everything and answer all my questions and allay my fears - so I left the surgery feeling more positive than when I walked in! He has given me Metformin 500mg once per day and Simvastatin 40mg. He agrees with self-testing and the individual taking control of their life - he did not lecture me once! I love him!!!

I found this forum earlier in the week when I was trying to find out more information and I think I will be coming back time and time again as there is a lot of support and help out there - for which I, for one, am very grateful.

As I'm new to this it will take me some time to get my head around the terminology etc - (what are spikes, for instance?) so please be patient with me if I ask really dumb questions.

I have a weight problem and need to lose approx 4st - so will be looking at the low-carb ideas - I have spent the last 3 years trying to lose weight by trying the low-fat way and it obviously isn't working for me - so want to try out something new.

I'm a fairly positive person and I know I will have good and bad days sometimes but I will not become a victim of this condition and I hope with all your help I will remain positive and in control.

Sue - I think losing 3 st is great - you have done well. Keep at it - the weight will shift and you should be pleased with what you have lost so far.

I can never seem to get past 1 stone and then I manage to put it all on again but this time I am more determined than ever - I think being diagnosed today has given me the kick up the backside I need. I bought a new cookbook today called 'The big book of low-carb recipes' - they all look good and most are quickly prepared and each recipe is carbohydrate rated which helps because you don't have to work it out for yourself! Although I eat fairly healthily (or so I thought) I am a fairly lazy cook and like things that don't take ages to prepare and this cookbook doesn't look too bad.

Thanks I really appreciate your support. I just wish I had tried low-carb before and maybe I wouldn't be overweight. Anyway I have nothing to lose except pounds and hopefully this will help me control my bg levels. i have a lot to learn.

Thanks Trinkwasser - my doc is lovely and quite cute! However I was cursing him this morning because I took the statin he gave me (Simvastatin) last night and I woke up this morning suffering with Vertigo and a few stomach problems - obviously this one doesn't agree with me. I can cope with the stomach problems but not the vertigo. Anyway, its a good excuse to go visit him again!!!!

Thanks Salsasue and thanks Hanadr - I am so grateful for yours and this forum's support. I know I have heaps to learn but as I am determined to control this condition I am at the moment lapping up all the information on this site - who better to get help and advice from than those people who have the condition and are willing to share their knowledge and experiences. As I said earlier my doctor was great but there is nothing like talking to fellow 'sufferers' so to speak.

Once I start testing I am sure I will have loads more questions for you all. What I am beginning to understand is that 'one size doesn't fit all' and what suits one person may not suit another - so I will have to find out for myself what suits me best. Oh I do love a challenge!!!

I've tried Rye bread this weekend and must admit I quite like it - never thought to try it before so now am looking forward to trying lots of other new things. Onwards and upwards (not my bg levels of course)!

Thanks for the advice re Rye bread - I did look at the carbs and realised it was fairly hi-carb so I have only been having half a slice every other day. I haven't received my testing kit yet so can't tell what it's doing to my bg levels yet - should be getting machine next week. Is there any bread it might be possible to have do you know - or is it a complete no-no?
