Hi i will start from the beginning, i had a blood test done about 4 months ago and my sugar level came back at 9.2 as a random test. My doc asked me to have a Glucose Tolerance Test which i had 5 weeks ago. My first reading was 8.2 and my 2 hour test after the glucose was 18.4. I was in at the same GP who said i should have a basic fasting blood test and if it came back double numbers then i was diabetic so i went for the blood test ( I havent had the result yet but doc expects it to be in normal range ). I was in seeing the doc 3 days ago for something unrelated and he pricked my finger and the reading on the meter was 5.6 and according to him in his opinion, i wasnt diabetic. I got called in yesterday evening by the diabetic doctor who told me that other docs were talking nonsense and the ordinary fasting test was a waste of time because it proved nothing ,that he thinks i am diabetic and has asked me to have another Glucose Tolerance Test ( All this and im needle phobic ). I head is spinning because i dont know who to listen to. From the readings ive gave can anyone advise or give me related info.

many thanks

The oral glucose tolerance test you did most certainly suggests you are diabetic - a reading over 11.2 at that 2 hour stage says diabetic. The one-off 5.6 - well, we all get them fairly regularly and we're certainly diabetic! One-off random finger prick tests tell you nothing from a diagnostic viewpoint. A very high one could say diabetes, but a low one doesn't say NO diabetes.
Have the repeat test, and don't get palmed off with any nonsense
Good luck!

Hi Sorry to hear about your poor treatment. It seems to be the norm rather than the exception.
I'd insist that they do a glucose tolerence test and an Hba1c blood test. This should confirm it once and for all if you are Diabetic.
Also insist that you have a print of the test results for your own records. They can't refuse, and you can always go elsewhere for a second opinion if you have them. Or come back to the forum for advice.
You should have the results back within 10 days. so don't delay.
If they come back and they say you are what they call pre diabetic, or glucose intolerent. You will still need help to control your blood sugar levels. As high blood sugars will always start to damage your your body.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your doctor. Insist on your rights.

Thank you guys for the speedy responses. Im quite an anxious patient at the best of times and always think the worst of everything and when i got told i may be diabetic my first thought was thinking the worst and hit a right depression as i dwell on things. I think the doctor didnt help because he told me that no matter what the outcome was, diet or medication, that one day i would definitely end up on insulin. I dont think im feeling any different than most of you guys did on your diagnosis but anyway, thanks for the advice.
