I've been fighting against being registered Type 2 since last April, but have let them do it because even if I'm just insulin resistant at the moment I'm certainly at very grave danger of the real thing. I'm 61, obese, not active enough and like wine too much!
In the middle of a stressful house move last April my fbg was 9 and my HbA1c 6.4. It was a wake-up call - I went straight back on the Atkins diet, lost 2 stone (only 6 more to go!) and started to increase my exercise. Not easy because I have really weak legs as a result of statins, which I don't take any more. By September my fbg was 6.2 and my HbA1c was 5.4. Then (after reading Bernstein) I discovered about metformin sometimes helping weight loss, so I agreed to be registered and am now on 1500mg of Metformin per day. Last fbg was 6, HbA1c 5.2.
I've used this Christmas as a bit of an experiment, with monitoring (shop-bought mince pies are really evil - 11.0 two hours later!) so I've learned a lot about what I really can and cannot eat. I also realised I've been having what I think are alcohol-induced hypos (sweats and heart pounding) occasionally at night for at least 3 years, even though my blood tests have always been within the 'normal' range.
So - here I am taking chage of my life. I've learned a lot from this site and the various forums before I registered, but I'm now a member. I live alone, and would be really grateful for your support and help, and the benefit of all your experience.
A happy and healthy New Year to all!
