God I wish I had found this board years ago unfortuntaely my control has been very poor and 5 weeks ago I had a heart attack and as if that wasn't bad enough last week I was told I have little blood vessels growing in my eyes and now require lots of little holes burned into my retina.

... let that be a warning to the newly diagnosed I wish I was back where you are now :?
 
Welcome to the forum Southern general!!(Like the name by the way! :thumbup: ) Sounds like you've REALLY had a rough time recently :thumbdown: Hope you stick around and there's a few members here who've had similar complications to you and will be able to support you/share experiences of those.

The Southern General is the hospital I was born in in 65 and it's the one I will have the laser surgery in in 12 ... not exactly a happy return :x
 
Welcome, you do have rather a striking name, I must say!

There are people who have had laser treatment for retinopathy who will be able to give you advise and reassurance.

One thing I would like to say, just because someone is newly diagnosed, doesn't mean they have just recently acquired diabetes. I believe I had it for around 5 years before diagnosis, it was only a change of practice that got me the actual diagnosis.

Anyway, welcome to the club no one wants to be a member of.

Thanks for that and thanks for the reassurance. I used to be a student and we did all we could to keep laser light out of our eyes so it goes against the grain to shine it in there :***:

The name is from the hospital where I was born in 1965 and will have the laser treatment in 2012 ... kinda completes the circle I suppose :think:

Hello Jim and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you've had a tough time of it so good luck with the laser treatment and suchlike. Reading your opening post it also sounds like you may have been reading the forum for a while in which case you'll have likely read about the benefits of adopting a low carb diet and also self testing your blood levels. Most members would advocate you do both those things. You don't need to be newly diagnosed to get those benefits and many members are like yourself and have found the forum only after being diagnosed for a while.

If you want help starting off on low carb then just ask.
