I'm in my mid 60''s and six years ago I was put on steroids for COPD (big mistake!), which made me put on a lot of weight. Because I cannot exercise I have Diabetese 2...try as I might to watch my diet (and I admit, I'm not brilliant at doing so) I was put on Metformin 1000 x 2 and have all the not so serious side affects. So...is there an alternative to Metformin?

Welcome DianneB, sorry you had to come here.

Are you amenable to diet? The advice you will see is LCHF. A lot of people have successfully managed to come off medication with this.

What are your BG readings, in particular HBA1C?

HI. There is no real alternative to Metformin which helps reduce insulin resistance thru excess weight. Yes, do follow a low-carb diet which should help reduce weight and blood sugar

OK, thank you for your responses...I can't really exercise, as I have problems breathing,, but I can do a low carb' diet, which I will make a greater effort with.

Welcome Dianne, good luck with the diet - you're in the right place for help here.

Welcome Diane. Ask as many questions as you like. It would help if we knew what sort of levels you are running at.

Hi Diane! You will be so glad you came here - I'm only almost 6 weeks diagnosed and really would not know any of what I know now if I had just took the "advice" given by my nurse practitioner!! Lovely folks here who share advice, experience, ideas etc........I now feel so different, in control and getting good results now, just 5 weeks into lchf!!

Hello Diane welcome,Metformin is a pest at first, hope you have got the SR not quite as bad, some people have no problems with them,I had every side effect, but fine now,so dont give up.
Lots of lovely people to help you on this site. You may find some threads about Metformin.

I'm sorry, I can't give you those detail, I don't know them...altho' I am checked by my practice nurse regularly twice a year.

G'day Dianne.

Let your meter guide you to a better way of eating for better blood glucose levels.

I notice you don't appear to test. Please obtain a meter and some strips and start.

Dianne, you need to get those readings so that you get a reference point to measure against and monitor your progress.

Only you can manage your condition on a regular basis with a little help from this site.
