Hello Ide just like to introduce myself my name is Christine and my son has had diabeates since he was three years old and he is now twenty two. We have gone through many highs and lows, hospitals holidays jobs etc. My son is now suffering diabetic complications which are diabetic retinothaphy and nerve damage. I would love to chat to other members in the same position and if I can help anyone with the experience that I have living with a child and now a young adult with diabeates I would love them to contact me. Looking fowrad to joining in with chats on the forum.
 
my grandfather is also have Diabetes..don't worry about your son,Diabetes is not a big issue.enjoy your present life with your son. don't worry about future.:)

Sorry I think the previous post gives some inappropriate advice. As a long term (over 48 years) Type I diabetic I know that time passes faster than you think. Whilst I know that good control does not necessarily prevent complication, and vice-versa, statistically it does reduce the chances. Your son does need to take responsibility and realise that loss of sight or a limb can be devastating. The tools to manage the condition are much better these days. Could he be suffering from depression and/or diabetic burnout? It may be worth a word with his GP.
 
As Stephan says its important to keep your BS under good control, I thought I had reasonable control and still ended up with mild neuropathy damage. He needs to keep good BS control to help keep it from getting worse, when my BS went high for a while I found the pins and needles got worse. Thankfully the nerve damage returned to the norm state as got my BS back under control.

I have been diabetic for 13 years and at some points you think stuff it and have a normal day and eat what you want, though it always has a side affect. Since the new year probs this is now out of the question as eating some of the things I liked sends my BS into the 20's :( and don't want to perm add to the diabetic damage I already have.
