I have had my Ileostomy for 40 years. Things have certainly changed a lot since then. I had Crohn;s Disease for 10 years prior to my surgery but the doctors didn't know what the problem was. I don't think they knew much about the disease back then. I have had ups and downs throughout this period and now I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I read in the diabetic newsletter recently that Metformin works mainly in the large intestine. I tried taking it and couldn't tolerate it at all. I read in the Wheat Belly book that gluten is a major cause of intestinal problems. Since then I have gone mostly Gluten Free in diet and sugar free for the diabetes. My numbers bounce up and down occasionally and I am currently trying to lose about 45 pounds. So I watch my calories and my intake of foods. Now they tell me my triglycerides are too high so they want to put me on more medication. I'm not really convinced that more medication is always the answer. I don't like putting all those chemicals into my body. I Would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on keeping my sugar level down and lowering my triglycerides naturally.

I don't eat carbs and I don't eat a lot of fats as I am trying to lose weight.
Can you give us an idea of what you typically eat in a day?

I try to do gluten free and sugar free meals. Omelet for breakfast make with egg beaters, onion, about 2 Tblsp ground ham and about 1/4 cup of finely grated cheese. Lunch i usually have either a ham and cheese sandwich or a cup of cottage cheese with a few slices of peaches packed in water cut up in it. For supper i usually have a salad and some kind of meat about a 3 oz piece and for a bed snack I have a small dish of fat free sugar free jello mixed with a little cool whip. I am counting my calories and try to stay between 1200 and 1500 a day.

That sounds great, except you might want to skip the bread as that is quite carby.

I have tried going without the bread and it doesn't seem to make any difference. I maybe eat 1 loaf in two weeks.

Do you have a blood glucose testing meter? That would help you find out if bread spikes your blood glucose and by how much.

I still think my body processes food differently since half my digestive system is missing because of my Ileostom which I have lived with for 40 years.

Yes and I don't see any difference there either.
What were the results when you tested before eating it and 2 hours after?
