Hello I was diagnosed with type 2 last year and am still struggling to get to grips with adjusting my diet. My sugar levels are all over the place and although I was initially prescribed a monitor and test strips my last prescription request for test strips was denied as " I wasn't insulin dependent' Bit of a contradiction really, because if I manage my diabetes better with monitoring I will hopefully never become insulin dependent?

My sugar levels are usually between 6 and 13, but today I think I experienced my 1st Hypo on the way home from work. felt very queezy shaky and generally ill. Tested my blood glucose with my last test strip and it was 4. So ate a sandwich and had a drink, which helped, but can't test again now.

I have a sweet tooth which is very difficult to ignore, but fortunately I must have a high metabolism as I am not overweight. (5'2" and under 9 stone) even though I eat too many sweets/chocs.

As well as type 2 diabetes I have genetically high cholesterol, (not caused through diet) and am not on meds. Although every time I have my diabetic review I am pressured to start taking statins to lower my cholesterol, which seems a package deal with diabetes. However I have so far refused these as I do not wish to end up a walking meds cabinet. and as my cholesterol level is not that High (6.1) which has lowered from 8.3 using a daily dose of lecithin over the last 12 months. I have a review next week and will be requesting test strips again using some of the tips I have read on this site, so will post again to let you know the outcome, if I can navigate my way back to this forum?

I would also be interested to read how others view statins or if others use alternative therapies etc to help them manage their diabetic related health issues.

I know if I don't get my diet and sugar intake sorted I am setting myself up for trouble ahead, so I am glad I found this forum , as it has motivated me to get myself in gear.

Hi, it's crazy with the refusal of strips, they are the way to know how what you eat affects you.
As to the meds I use statins, asprin & metformin &if if wasn't for these & the diet changes, I would have had to have had. a, stent for my vascular decease, but the surgeon put it off as things had improved since finding out I was T2.
It's totally up to you what you want to put in your body, but as I said they saved me an operation for the time being.
I also had a sweet tooth but since the T2 very little has passed My lips, even with the OH buying cream cakes & sweets for herself, (bit selfish if you ask me ), but I resist & feel better for it.
All I can say is WILLPOWER will help you if health is what you want my friend. We're hear for you.
