Hi, I'm Amanda,
Marcus, my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, September the 12th 2001, so for me, more than just the twin towers came crashing down that day.
Marcus was 18 months old and had been very ill but the doctors hadn't diagnosed him despite repeated visits. I was seven months pregnant with my daughter at the time.
Marcus is now 10 year old. I'd like to say diabetes is the only things we have problems with but he was born with syndactyly (middle finger of both hands joined together- which were separated just before he was diagnosed with diabetes) and recently we've finally got a diagnosis of autistic spectrum Disorder (which is what they call someone who's got characteristics of autism but doesn't fill all the tick boxes to have a formal diagnosis, and ADD (without the H!) and memory imparement.
Quite a lot for a little lad to grow up with! So you can imagine we've had a very rocky time of it.
Two months ago, we finally got Marcus on the pump and I can say its the best thing since sliced bread for him. Before that, we 'managed' on 2 injections a day (needle phobic) and we've carb-counted for over 5 years. His HbA1cs have always been in the low 7's.
He's on Humalog and uses the Accu-chek Combo- blue tooth connectivity.
I'd love to hear from someone who has also got a child on a pump or any other pump users because while its great, I'm having some teething problems.
Cheers Amanda
