Hi to everyone

This is all new to me lol My GP gave me fasting blood test a few weeks ago and it came back 6.7 (this is what I was informed ) and he said I had mild diabetes. My family history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart problems (which I have, currently under cardiac investigation only ectopic activity thankfully). Today I went to the opticians and informed them of my medical history, and they asked had I had a diabetic screening and to ring the GP for one. To cut a long story short rang the GP, to be informed they have no record of me being pre diabetes and have to have another fasting blood test and bp check. Now I was completely confused by this revelation as my GP explained I was borderline/ mild diabetes lol. My question is am I diabetic or not?

Thanks

Hi,

The answer is i dont know, what i can tell you is i had a fasting blood of 6.8 and they said it was possible pre diabetes . I then had a glucose tollerance test which was fasting 7.1 and then 10.1 after a glucose drink. So i am havig another glucose tollerance test to confirm type 2.
I started on a low carb diet and its working ok, just waiting for my second test now.
Theres lots of good advice on here, im new at this so just working things out .

Good luck x

Hi! You need to go back for a definitive test. Ask for an HbA1c which shows what your sugar levels have been for the lasting or so. That will tell you, then we can help with diet etc. you sound a bit in between and need a proper test, but I'd take it as a reason for cutting out the bad stuff anyway - sugars and starchy carbs. Otherwise you'll be back here as a definite type 2 anyway! If you are, don't worry, it's not as bad as you might think.

Hi

Thank you both for your replies, I walk a lot especially with my dog lol and eat quite healthy only now and again do I treat myself. I do have to go back and see my GP and will discuss this with him again.

Once again thanks for your replies. :D

Hi MissPinkUK

Welcome to the forum.

My sister has for the last 2 years on her annual blood tests come back with similar Bg levels as you, the doctor told her to loose weight cut out sugar, spuds, rice (go him) and behave or she will get DB.

she tried a bit the first year but then got told the same thing the 2nd year - in between the 2 I got diagnosed as Type 2 and started low carbing and lost weight as a result. This shocked her and made her see it will be her next year if she doesn't get her **** into gear.

So, 3 months on and she has also low carb'd lost weight and her doc is delighted to say the least. she may well evade or certainly delay a progression to T2

So, as grazer says you need a definitive test but it will be a good idea to have a look at what you're eating, as although you are "eating quite healthy now" what is healthy for a diabetic and non-diabetic are not necc the same thing.

Mary x
