Hi new here

Hi all

I'm new here - I've had a problem with my pancreas - probably early chronic pancreatitis for nearly 4 yrs now. I bought a monitor in 2011 after an attack of acute pancreatitis and all was ok (levels 4.5-5 max) so I haven't tested since then.

Since January I've had oral thrush, I've had nyasatin off the doctor but just can't get rid of it. One of the causes I read is diabetes - and I've been so thirst lately, my mouth so dry - some mornings even my tongue is completely dry. I'm on numerous high strength pain relief for the pancreatitis so wondered if dry mouth was that although I've not started anything new. My diet is poor - not in bad food poor but food = pain so I live off porridge (golden syrup), cereal bars and frozen yoghurt. I've wondered if poor nutrition is a cause of my thrush problem too.

Anyway I've started testing and my sugars today have been (not done at right times as wasn't sure but will be monitoring properly from tomorrow)

12 noon (4hrs after breakfast): 6.8
1.30 (30 mins after eating so too soon) - 8.4
3.30 - 2hrs after lunch (which was a cereal bar and a frozen yoghurt): 8.3 - so only dropped by 0.1 in 2 hrs
7.30 - 2 hrs after dinner (bowl of porridge, frozen yoghurt) - 6.9

Do these seem a bit high? I will do the fasting one in the morning - it concerns me the numbers are high 2hrs after eating yet it wasn't what you'd call a proper lunch either.

Any advice welcome - I'm finding the forum very useful x

Hi and welcome your numbers suggest that you may be diabetic. How ever if you do a fasting test in the morning. And then do a test just before you eat and then 2 hours after eating, however I would go and see your gp just to be sure

Thanks for replying. I will try testing before I eat then and after then 2 hours after - wasn't sure when I should be testing - I'm tracking it on an app so will get a weeks worth then see my GP, need to go back about the oral thrush, just can't get rid of it.

Thanks x

Keep track of things for a few days, but if things get worse ie your bg going over 10 then go strength to the doctor, others may disagree with levels being this high but that is the maximum I would go to before getting advice. As for the oral thrush I have no idea about that but someone else will be around later that may be able to help you

Hello, your gp can px you something for the thrush ........welcome to the site x

Thanks ill keep an eye on it. I've had a prescription off the GP for the thrush but its not helped, going to pick up some more tomorrow - will see if that helps. Fingers crossed

Ran out of lancets so haven't tested for a couple of weeks until today and getting 8.3 ish again 2 hrs after eating (bowl of porridge which is my usual meal due to eating problems - pancreas issues). Will keep a track. Been back to GP today for more oral thrush meds. Can't get rid of it, had an awful week with itching, had 1.5hrs sleep some nights it's so bad, awake now after sleeping for 4hrs and scratching away like mad. GP gave me some tablets and cream (can't cream my whole body though!), I thought itching related to my pancreas issue as I do get elevated liver enzymes but also read tonight it can also be sign of undiagnosed diabetes. Will keep testing now ready for when go back to GP, never mentioned my sugars today, want some more evidence first

You haven't been diagnosed with diabetes? If I just read that right. Your bg levels are consistent with having diabetes, as for eating porridge I would try a different form of oats if like mat people you use rolled oats for making porridge then try using pin head oats instead as others on here find that that reduces there bg levels

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
Novomix 30, Victoza, metformin 2000mg sr (but not taking them as they play havoc with my insides,

It was persistent thrush that finally took me to the doc for t2 diagnosis. Yeast thrives on sugar. Cut the sugar/carbs and you starve the yeast.

Could you manage scrambled eggs instead of porridge? Cheese instead of cereal bar? Frozen full fat Greek yogurt? I took one big tablet from the doc and cut my carbs to finally get relief from thrush (not oral thrush)

You have my sympathy, Darbs. It is a horrible condition made worse by sleep deprivation :(

Yes that's right not diagnosed with anything as yet - I bought the sugar monitor a few years back after I had acute pancreatitis to keep an eye on it as I know chronic pancreatitis can lead to diabetes. I started testing again after I read oral thrush can be a sign - I will speak to the doctor after got a couple of weeks of readings.
Yes I might have to think about eating something else, my pancreas disease causes me more pain when I eat and already on huge amounts of pain killers so I limit what I eat as eating = more pain. If I do have problems with diabetes / pre diabetes I will need to change my already restricted diet as it is too high in sugar. Thanks for your advice. I'll report back when got some more readings

Yes will look to change to the greek yoghurt - cheese I can't eat as its too fatty for me. Maybe soup? I tend to not eat those type of things as they bring on the nausea too. Need to do some research on what I can eat that's low in fat and not high in sugar - I find most things I eat are sugar loaded as low fat

Thanks everyone - and for the suggestions of that to eat. Just created a new post to say my GP has recommenced fasting glucose test and A1c so will probably get the results Tuesday now. I've continued to have a few higher numbers and my thrush (had for nearly 4mths now) is spreading right down the back of my tongue / throat, it just won't go away. Will update when I have the results.

Blimey, you poor thing. Sleep deprivation floors me. Adding in the rest that you have would knock me sideways!

Re the thrush, have you tried live yoghurt? It's an old home remedy, but I had a friend in college who swore by it. Said it worked better than anything from the chemist. I'm thinking you could have a teaspoon and swish it around your mouth, then let it slip down your throat. Maybe a pot by the bedside? Must be sugar free natural LIVE yoghurt.

Sugar definitely feeds thrush. So does alcohol, pasta, bread, cereal, rice... You get the picture...

Am I right that you need to be avoiding fat in your diet?
Can you eat fibre?
The reason I ask is that a lot of us diabetics Add fat or fibre to meals, to slow down the absorption of carbs, so that our glucose levels are lower.

Let us know what happens with the doctor?

Hi

thanks for the suggestion, I might try the yoghurt, can't hurt can it. I don't drink alcohol due to pancreatitis, or really bread / rice. I tend to live off porridge and frozen petis filous. I'm on a huge amount of pain relief and that's the only way to keep my pain levels down a bit so I can function. I definitely avoid fat yes, that encourages pancreas to work harder to digest so causes me more pain. Fibre, I tend to avoid but I can try it. I know if I do have prediabetes / diabetes then I'll have to stop my porridge and yoghurt combination as they are all high in sugar. Not sure what I'd eat then, been living off this diet for 3yrs or there abouts.

I'll update when I get the results (probably Tuesday) thanks
