Hello to all, I have recently been diagnosed with T2D and I am looking forward to seeing other members experiences and lifestyle changes they have made the will help me understand what is ahead for me.
Went to see a diabetic nurse for the first time last week which was not a very good experience. The nurse rattled through the complications, what diabetes entails and what medication I will need without making much eye contact with me throughout the 1 hour and 10 minutes session. When I tried to ask the nurse anything I was overridden as if my point of view was not valued. There was no consideration on her part that I was in shock at being told I was a diabetic and what lay ahead for me.
Having this condition feels like a death sentence and the reasonable health that I thought I had seems lost to me now.
This is just a small part of what I am feeling and any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for listening.

Hi im new here also I would have been so annoyed if that had happened to me I haven't yet seen the diabetic nurse and im praying that shes not like the one you described I was hoping to take a list of questions to ask but maybe these appointments don't go like that
I think we all google diabetes when were diagnosed and read all the bad things that can happen
so I hope my hour wont contain all the bad things that can happen
I was first diagnosed 2 years ago and lost weight n then was told I was fine 2 years on ive put the weight back on and doc says its come back
hmm Just hope im able to lose the weight again

Hi. I too have only just joined the forum, despite being diagnosed at T2 13 years ago. Fortunately I only needed Metformin originally 2 x 500 a day. Then 3 years ago it was decided I did not need any medications for T2. I still rattle when I move as I take 3 blood pressure meds a day, plus aspirin, ranitidine to counteract the aspirin, high cholesterol med. To try and stop my joints being too much trouble I also take Cod Liver Oil and Glucosamine.
I am really sorry you have had a bad experience with a diabetes nurse. Over the years I have seen a good number of nurses on a twice a year basis and fortunately I have never had a bad one. If they cannot stop and talk to you about your concerns they should be working in a bank. Amongst the ones I have seen some have been better than others, but no one has ever ignored what I asked. If it happens again with the same nurse I would make a serious effort to see a different nurse. It is important that you can get on with the nurse you see most.

Listening and talking are what good forums are about. Good luck in the future.

Hi Onlyababy and welcome to you and the other newbies :)

I don't think of it as a death sentence, more of a new beginning. I am much healthier this year than I was last thanks to my diagnosis. It is great that you have found this place. Stick around and you will learn loads.

Thanks for taking the time out to welcome me and reassure me that I am not alone.
I am looking forward to getting involved in this forum and sharing experiences.

Welcome, I've only been on here just over a week myself. I agree with Avocado, try and look at it as an incentive to make a positive change to your lifestyle. I haven't had my first session with the DN yet, it may or may not be similar to yours, but I'm not planning on 'coming along quietly' if he/she starts spouting rubbish. And if I hadn't come on here I would not be confident in that.

The begining of March I was told that my blood sugar was high at 10.5mmol and the cholesterol was 6.8 and to reduce this with diet and exercise, which I did do. Two weeks from being told that I had to have another blood test, and to see the dn. My results was bs was 10.2 and cholesterol had gone down to 6.0 but was put on medication metformin and a statins when i asked why a statin when it was lowering with what i was doing, because as a biabetic your cholesterol should be 4.0 the DN told me. it was hard for me to get a word in edge ways so I hope nexttime it will be different because I will pipe up and get my say.
