Hi

My name is Emma and my hubby, Paul, was diagnosed diabetic around 7 months ago.

Our previous GP diagnised him as type 2, his new diabetic nurse ( moved from North England to Norfolk recently ) has said his diagnosis swings between type 1 and 2! He has the symptos of a type 1 without the need for insulin???

He i currectly varying on his blood levels - his GP test was 7.2,his home tests vary from 3.1 to 17 ish!

Hope to gain some invaluable insights here as to things associated with diabetes such as numbness is hands on aking, foot problems, medication etc. He has been told due to his stomach issus, he wo't be able to have metformin ( I think it is called that ) but we are hoping for a medication once new GP is happy with his stomach problems :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. The nurse sounds scary. One can't 'swing between' type 1 and 2. I have no idea what she can possibly mean by that. The symptoms of type 1 and type 2 are the same I thought? So I don't know what she means by that either. You need to ask her to explain better, and if she can't she needs to refer your husband to someone who can.

Metformin isn't the only medication available for type 2 diabetes so don't worry about that. It can cause very upset stomachs so if your husband already has problems thats why they want to avoid it.

Good luck to your husband and I hope you find the forum useful!

Thanks for the reply :)

She said because my hubby is type 2, currently diet controlled, he shouldn't be experiencing such high and low readings? Last week, before we went to see her he was 3.2 an hour after breakfast yet that afternoon, he was 17.1 an hour after his tea. That is a normal occurence for him and despite following a good diet, appropriate amount of excersise etc, we can't seem to gain good control of his levels.

He is quite irritable and aggressie when he gets hungry, sleeps an awful lot, constantly thirsty, gets blurred vision and the shakes accompanying these symptoms.

She mentioned another medication for him that isn't so harsh on th #e digestive system but the name escapes me - begins with a G perhaps?

His eye testshave all been clear so far which is good and aside from stabbing pains in his big toe, his feet are doing good.

His father was a type 1 diabetic and sadly passed away 18 months ago due to complications at the hospital ( nothing to do with his diabetes ) when he went into have his leg amputated due to a hard hitting infection moving from his foot upwards :(

He is experiencing symptoms of high blood sugar.

Was his evening meal loaded with carbs?

He needs to cut down on them if it was because thats causing him to feel ill.

Also is he eating sugary foods too?

The tablet you are thinking of is probably Gliclazide.

The diabetes nurse said his diet is good - he only eats home cooked foods, fresh veggies, soups etc I don't give him too many potatoes as previous nurse said starches turn to sugar. I am unsure about carbs as this has never been discussed with us. On a normal day his evening meal consists of veggies, white meat or fish, few potatoes. He rarely has chips and we only have red meat once a week sometimes twice.

His levels go that high regularly though with no attern to his eating habits.

He rarely eats sugary foods either - thankfully, he desn't have a sweet tooth :)
