Hello everyone!

A little bit of background first, i had GD while pregnant with my daughter in 2008, i had it quite badly apparently and was on insulin for the 9 weeks before she was born.

I had several fasting tests afterwards and was showing high results for the first 8 weeks i was then apparently "bordeline" after 3 months so no more tests were done.

Roll on to July 2009 and only by accident really discovered that by blood sugar was high so off to the docs and another fasting test done with a result of 11.9 after 16 hours of fasting so i was referred to my local diabetic team.

Started on slow release metformin and back on same kind of diet as when pregnant but made no diffence so upped the metformin to 3x 500g, still very little change to BG so they added in 2x glicazade to the mix - guess what still very little change! lost 1 and a half stone since end of July

So i am going back to hospital to be put on insulin tomorrow :(

I am 29 and overweight current BMI is 33, i have lost 2 and a half stone in the past year.

Anyone type 2 and put on insulin more or less straightaway? i am confused as i thought i would be classed as type 1 can anyone explain why?

Welcome to the forum Naomi!

People with gestational diabetes can go on to develop type-2 in later life. Perhaps your weight led to the assumption that you are type-2, although getting diabetes in your 20's is usually a type-1 diagnosis. If the drugs for insulin resistance, suchas Metformin, are not effective, it may have lead your practitioner to think you're not producing enough, or insulin, which also could suggest a type-1 diagnosis, although some type-2s can move on to insulin treatment.
I'm sure your clinic will be able to explain what type you are, and why they're changing your treatment, and meanwhile there are many regulars on this forum with a wealth of experience who help you out. You've come to the right place!
Best of luck with your hospital appt tomorrow, and I hope you get all your questions answered, and get a clearer picture of your diagnosis.
Jus :)

thanks for your reply!

I shall be asking them afew more questions tomorrow, although i suppose really it doesnt matter which type i am now i am going on insulin.

will no doubt be posting lots of questions from now on!
