New member. I'm 52, female, living in South Wales (UK). No family history of diabetes. Fit?? and healthy until recently. Diagnosed type 1 in April 2014 after admitted to hospital for kidney infection after antibiotics didn't work. Lost 2 1/2 stone, spoke to a diabetic nurse, luckily had my daughter with me who took the info in as I wasn't 'with it' during discussion, given '2 little sticks' and a bit of standard reading matter and after a week on heavy antibiotics was sent home. Still felt really rough. Readmitted a week later with spleen and kidney problems. They tried to drain the spleen but punctured my lung so I have 4 scars one of which took 9 weeks to heal. Not a great start - on sick for 14 weeks but back to office work now. Using glucomen plus LCD meter, Lantus solostar (16 at night) and novorapid (6 before meals). Friends/managers at work have been really helpful, but have been warned due to Civil Service rules I have to watch how much sick I take - not helpful when I'm still waiting for a CT scan to check if my kidneys and spleen are back to normal - they were scanned before I left hospital and the size was reducing, so hopefully they've gone in the right direction. Had contact with diabetic nurse in hospital and by phone since April, although she did come to see me briefly at end of my 3 week hospital stay when she put my name into computer and found I'd been readmitted. Diabetic Nurse in doctors surgery told me the hospital will give me all the advice/referrals I need as they're only there for basic maintainance of the condition. On the positive side - dvla only took about 4 weeks to update my driving licence!

Hi ck and welcome to the forum.

You seem to have had a baptism of fire and I am glad that you are feeling better.

Ask any questions you like and plenty of Type 1s will answer.

Hello and welcome. What a tough time you have had, but hopefully now over the worst. Hopefully you will receive plenty of help and support from the T1's on here. Good luck with your recovery.
