Hello Everyone.

Im Daz, im 34.

Had a Glucose tolerance test at the hospital 2 weeks ago and the results were that my blood sugar is 12.4, 2 hours after having that horrible drink. My doctor has advised me that I have type 2 diabetes :( My dad who is 60 was also diagnosed with this a year ago, and also his mum had it.

Have been to see my doctor today who advises me that my Cholesterol is 5.5, so have been given simvastatin for this, and my blood pressure is high - I was on Ramipril and Bendroflumethazide for this but she has added Amlodipine.

I havent been given medication for the Diabetes as yet, but I have to see her again on Tuesday so that she can check my blood pressure, I am assuming she will then start the Metformin and she has also mentioned giving me Aspirin to take daily.

Im at a bit of a loss at the minute as to what I need to do, I have an appointment booked for my diabetic nurse in 2 weeks, I just dont know where I go from here?

I'm 40 and was diagnosed 2 months ago. Felt totally alone and a bit scared, was told i was type 2 at the hospital on Friday with BG at 18, go and see the doctor on monday - goodbye. It was awful. I had just nipped to see the doctor on my way to work as i thought i'd got a bladder infection. Turned out I had ketoacidosis or something, apparently quite serious. 2 months on, its ok, i have my medication sorted - 3 metformin per day, i test regular - your doctor will arrange for you to see a diabetic nurse and she will give you all the kit.

Take things 1 step at a time, its such a lot to take in. The biggies for me was to cut out high carb stuff like pasta, white bread, potatos etc as well as the obviuos chocolate and sweets.Oh and eating regular. Do it slowly and read this web site. The advice is good and don't be afraid to post questions.

2 months on....I've never felt so good for years. The weight is dropping off me without really trying. It will all fall into place in time.

Hello Daz and welcome :)

You will probably benefit from being able to self test so that you know what your food is doing to your BG level so it would be a good idea to ask your DN for a meter and testing strips. This is the only way that you will know what you can safely eat and what not to eat or perhaps cut down on.

Browse the various threads and ask questions - there is usually someone around to help. :)

I have been a bit worried today but you have put my mind at ease a little, and I needed that, so thank you. Im glad to hear you are doing ok, it fills me with some hope :D

Im having a good root around this site and I will be asking questions once Im a little more settled here, just need a few days I think to take it all in.

hi Daz, my names sara and like you im newly diagnosed (about 3 weeks), i have started cutting out carbs and hopefully this will be enough for me.I was given a test meter and i use that before and 2 hours after meals and that way i can work out what is good for me , fortunately steak had my bs at 5.8 last night - so its an excuse to eat more of that lol.
my fasting bs was 13.2 and bloodpressure was 145/118 but in 3 weeks have got my blood pressure down to 120/84 so huge improvement, i have started excersice mostly walking and bouncing on the kids trampoline (heaven knows what the neighbours think).
I also feel healthier than i have in ages ,so amybe its not all bad.

Thanks for your reply, I was feeling quite down and a little scared yesterday, but feel slightly better already thanks to the few replies I have had.

My blood pressure has me worried at the minute so good to hear yours has come down in only 3 weeks, having mine checked again Tuesday.

With regards to the test meter, does this not hurt long term? I dont like needles, had blood taken from my finger before and that hurt quite a bit, but it was on my pad, can it be taken from the side of the finger?

You seem to be doing really well so far and thats great news, it gives me some hope, just hope I can get my mind around it all pretty soon and get myself sorted out. Looking forward to seeing my diabetic nurse in 2 weeks so I can have a good chat with her about things.
