Hi

I’ve been told I’m pre-diabetic, too. My reading is 44mmol/mol. Anyone know what that means? Is it very bad, not so bad or easily sorted! I’m about to start the Fast 800 diet to get rid of my extra weight

Hi @InkaLeo and welcome to the forum.

At 44 your HbA1c is in the pre-diabetic range. In the UK a score of 48 or above is regarded as diabetic, 42-47 as pre-diabetes and anything below as non-diabetic.

Many of us on here have reduced our numbers - some from very high starting points - to non-diabetic levels by changing what we eat. The fast 800 diet is certainly an option, but quite a drastic one that I personally would find very difficult to stick to. If you do go down that route my advice would be to have a plan for what you’ll eat at the end of the restricted eating period.

An alternative option would be to reduce the carbohydrates you eat - those with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes are intolerant to carbs and reducing them helps to bring blood sugar levels down quite quickly. How much you reduce them is guided by both personal choice and your response to eating them. Some just need to cut down a bit, others need to almost completely eliminate them.

I’d advise you to have a read of this link: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.17088/ and also to look at the dietdoctor.com website which is full of information, recipes and meal plans.

The low carb section of this forum would also be helpful to you.

Hello @InkaLeo,

Prediabetic means you're on your way to diabetic levels that can cause complications, but you're not there yet. It also means you can head it all off! So "yay" for hope! The diet you're proposing is a temporary one though, it's not designed for the long haul, and well... You've got a condition here for life. So you'll have to find something you can keep up indefinitely sooner or later. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help get you started, but all in all... Don't panic. Your levels are just barely prediabetic and you should be able to get them back under 42 again in no time at all.
Good luck!
Jo
