Hello everyone,

My name is Darren and I am a 29yr old male from the midlands, working as a Veterinary Surgeon. I enjoy Scouting, Canoeing, and Taekwondo to name but a few things.

I was dx with Type1 diabetes in May of this year and talk about upset! I already suffer from epilepsy (dx in 2006) and then wham, get hit with this. It was so quick as well. Within the space of 2 weeks I went from 'normal' to peeing nearly every 1-2hrs, drinking buckets, eating loads; lost ~6Kg in a couple of month. I knew from my medical training that it had to be diabetes but put off going to see the Dr as trying to convince myself it was but a blip (I should have known better!). I did a urine dipstick at work and Gluc+++, ketones+++, so I went. They measure my BG and it was 26! A catheter was put in me and cared for from there.

At present I am injecting insulin (Humalin M3) BID. I take 4IU morning and 6IU in the evening. My overall average BG at present is 6.2mmol/L a day. I keep a graph with averages to monitor myself easier. Since tx the lowest I have been was 2.5 (scarey) and the highest 18.7 (while on hol with buffet-type dinner so naughty). Still in the honeymoon period but Dr thinks I may just be really sensitive to insulin also.

What scares me the most is knowing about this condition through my career. The complications scare the **** out of me, and plus with having the epilepsy it's like "what the hell have I done to deserve all this!?" What keeps me going; and this sounds horrible, is knowing that there is always someone struggling with things a lot worse. I learned with my epilepsy not to bottle things up, and am on a similar forum for that. Hope to speak to many here, and hopefully I can contribute also :)

Anyway, that's my ramble; and hopefully talk to you all soon.

D

Hi and welcome to the forum Darren :)

Those were the classic symptoms that I had pre-diagnosis, could have drank from a tap continuously and still been thirsty, as you say there's far worse conditions we could live with..... and like you I always keep this in mind.

Looking forward to your contribution on the forum
