Hi there I'm Mo live in Cardiff and new diagnosed and far from happy with myself but at least I've started to make changes .I am interested in finding out if most people on here can get prescriptions for testing strips for their monitors as my doctors appear to be very reluctant to give prescriptions and i'm purchasing my own .

Hi Mo and welcome.

It is quite unusual for type 2's to be given a meter and prescriptions for strips, and when they are it is generally for a pitiful number a month. I was given a meter with 50 strips by my nurse, but nothing since. We have to buy our own I'm afraid.

Have a good read round, and come back with any questions.

I have pre-diabetes so no chance of me getting any, but I've managed to locate some cheap ones which are working for me. Check out SD Codefree from HomeHealth. It's about £7-8 for 50 test strips and you can buy a starter kit not much money.

I'm newly diagnosed and trying to understand how much - and what- carbs I can have and keep my BG ok. I test on waking, before meals, 1 & 2 hours after meals and before bed. It is a lot of testing, but I'm learning so much about what I can and can't eat - and some of the results have been a total surprise!

Welcome to the forum :)

Hi Mo and welcome.

NICE guidelines for type 2 states that newly diagnosed, on oral medication, who wish to make lifestyle changes, should be offered a meter to monitor those changes.

I quoted this and was given a meter. I currently get strips and lancets on prescription which equate to two a day. I purchase some myself (VAT free;)) as I test three or four times a day.

I think if you just ask, you wont get. If you put forward a coherent plan of why you need the meter you might be more successful.

Hi and welcome to the forum Mo.

If your having to purchase your own test strips then the SD Codefree Meter is the one to go for, I believe the strips cost around £7 for a box of 50.

Thanks for your replies and welcomes , I'll try the places that have been mentioned so far the lowest price i got was on ebay and that was £15 .I'm aware that some groups are hoping to petition goverment re free test strips etc . It certainly seems to depend on budget and different surgeries' but as a tool in monitoring blood sugar I think it is a plus .And when you hear that if u have a bmi of 30/ 31 there are plans to offer gastric surgery to those people  .
