Hi, I have just found this web-site and it is sooooo nice to see that I am not alone!! My husband has been T1 for nearly 25 years (diagnosed 2 days after our wedding) so our whole married life has been governed by diabetes. His control is 'not bad' (we are quite strict with food) but recently has been having loads of hypos - 2 or 3 a day. Diabetic nurse has him monitoring everything he eats and recording BSL's at regular intervals throughout day (and night sometimes) for two weeks to try & stabilise. Lucozade is a God-send, but I see lots of you use jelly babies - are they quicker? Lucozade usually works in 20 minutes. What are the opinions on Hypofit cos I see it has a longish shelf life (not like Glucogel) Last night had to call paramedics as lucozade didn't work and had no Glucagon - he had violent fit, which has never done before, and I was really scared he was going to die (stopped breathing for a bit) Sorry for long introduction - maybe i should have posted elsewhere?

Hi ceale,
Sorry I cannot help you with your queries as I am type 2. There are lots of knowledgable type 1's using the forum so someone will give you some answers soon. Must have been a terrible experience for both of you.

Just like to say welcome.
Catherine.

Hi
I know your predicament
I have been married to my T1 husband for 37 years and ironically, developed T2 myself a few years ago.
We too had many incidents of Hypos. And we've had the fits too. In his case in a supermarket with just our (then) 4 year old with him. I had drilled her and she was able to tell the First aider all about Daddy. they called the ambulance and all was eventually well. 25 years later, he's still with us and she's now a married mother herself, who doesn't actually remember the incident.
We've had a more recent bout of hypos, which have now stopped( I hope) It included a night time one which ended with me having to pull my very large husband out of the bathtub, into which he'd fallen and got stuck. He was unhurt.
The answer for us was to reduce the insulin and keep monitoring until everything came back into balance.
I have now convinced him that Bernstein's doctrine of small numbers is the safest plan. His sugars are now usually in the safe range and insulin doses are about half what they were.
What regime for indulin does your husband use? If it's bBasal/bolus, you can try reducing the night time background dosse. Keep monitoring and it will be safe. If the Nurse doesn't like it, tell her that the present regime isn't safe.
Lucosade is my husband's hypo remedy of choice. I carry Glucose tablets, but he hates the taste. Jelly babies are good too.

Hi, thanks for all your help. Annual check up with Consultant on Tuesday, so I am going along too, to ask more questions and hopefully get insulin doses sorted out. My husband is on 18 units of Lantus in evening for base, and Actrapid at other times (morning and evening, but also in between if necessary) Lantus has been dropped from 22 to 18 over last few weeks to try and even out things.
Hanadr - what do you do during fits? I know basic first aid, but my husband is much bigger than me and also goes 'heavy' and I can't move him so 'recovery position' is no use. Hope it doesn't happen again, but want to be prepared if it does.

Hi Ceale my husband is also much bigger than me but you can use the recovery position if you grab leg and shoulder and pull ,it's all a question of momentum.
