I'm curious when i read that 11- 13 BH readings are high an in the long term cause damage. I'm not really believing that it could cause eye damage or kidney damage.... I had symptoms for a year before I got diagnosed an realized what those symptoms actually meant. Like thirst and full bladder aches and constant toilet visits blurred vision etc. Say I had known I and was testing I know the readings would of been 10 plus an up. As I was sick for a year before being taken to hospital to get the diagnosis. .. my organs are fine. So you must have to totally abuse yourself an get high readings for years , surly to have any major issue right? ??????

I`m not going to lay claim to any kind of expertise here but I would imagine the damage caused by high bg levels is both long term and progressive and therefore not readily noticeable in it`s early stages. It is however an unarguable fact that high bg levels, if left unchecked and untreated, will cause problems of varying degrees of severity. Hopefully yours was caught before any real damage was done.:)

Good you had no lasting effects from it. Question is, for how many years you intend to have diabetes, that is, how many years you have left? I was diagnosed at 49 and intend to do what I can to keep my BG below 7 in order to avoid diabetes complications in the 1 or 10 or 45 years left of my life.

Of course you are at risk of developing complications with BG as high as 11 or above. In time. And if you are unlucky, not a very long time either.

Well I for one have no wish to risk it, so do my best to keep my glucose levels under control. My sight, in particular, is my most valued possession.

Who knows how long it takes before damage is done. I estimate I was diabetic for 6-7 years before being diagnosed and during that time my BS levels would have been well over 13. In saying that we are all different so some may experience issues sooner and some later.

From the DCCT study:

slide027.gif

The relative risk of running at 11-13 mmol/l, which is something like an Hba1C of around 9.5%, has a risk of complications that is 3-7 times greater than someone with an Hba1C of 6%.

There is also plenty of evidence that genetics plays a factor in your risk of complications, which means that making any predicitons is extremely difficult.
