High Blood Sugar - Low GI

Hi, I'm type 1 for 11 years, 5 injections a day. I can't seem to get my blood sugars under 10mmol. I eat healthy natural food with plenty of low gi fruit and veg and focus on lean protein and low gi. I rarely eat medium or hi gi food. My levermir is 40u at night and 40u in the morning. My fasting blood sugars have been 10-15mmol in the last 2 weeks. I haven't been eating anything starchy in the evenings and my novorapid is 6-8u for meals. No amount of insulin, water or exercise is bringing my sugars to under 10mmol. At my wits end and I'm hoping this year I get approved to have an insulin pump. My fasting bs this morning was 10 then 12 before breakfast. Took 6u fast acting and a 2 egg omelette with broccoli, peppers and tomato. Bs 2 hours later 14.8. :0S
 
Have you asked about getting on a DAFNE course ? Do you carb count or take fixed amounts ? I would keep a food/insulin diary for the next 2 weeks and see if you can see any patterns developing. When everything is written down, it's easier and maybe you occasionally underestimate carb intake ? Also, if you keep a diary, you can provide your DSN or doc with details of your problem. Hiya I use myfitnesspal to track my carbs and protein every day. I rarely eat over 100g carbs and I get them from low GI veg. I did do dafne many years ago and Ian Gallen is my consultant. I go hiking every weekend and am fairly active too. I do 4-5 tests a day. I haven't changed my eating plan in the last 2 1/2 years and in the summer I had lows. Its strange as I didn't even change my regime over christmas. No idea whats going on and one day I did a fasting day to track my sugars and they were all over the place from 10-19, just fluctuated by themselves. Pen

I wonder whether you may be developing some slight resistance to insulin then ? I think you certainly need to speak to your DSN.
 
I'm booking an appointment with my gp who specialises in diabetes this week and seeing about an insulin pump. I calculated that at 5 injections a day I've had about 17,000+ injections since becoming diabetic. Maybe my fat cells are too battered and bruised to accept it

You do appear to have some resistance to the insulin that you inject Penny, at a guess I would say your basal insulin needs increasing but your already on quite a high dose and without dong fasting checks it's impossible to know.

If you inject in the same area all the time you can have problems with insulin absorption so it's wise to keep rotating where you inject, more than likely a pump would be ideal and I hope that your gp and consultant can see this.
 
I would agree that your basal would probably need increase if your BS is that high when fasting.

If you did DAFNE ages ago it may be a good idea to ask to do it again if you're struggling with your BS.

I had to do a DAFNE style course before getting a pump.

Also to consider is: are you more stressed than usual? I find I need more insulin when I am.

Also remember to change your pen needle each time. Someone told me that it can make a difference to your BS control.
