High Blood Sugar

Hi, I'm a newbie here so please treat me gently! My blood sugar was all over the place and so my doctor has started me on 10-20 units per day of Lantus Insulin as well as Metformin tablets. I was on Diamicron but he told me to stop them. I was doing okay but over Christmas I have had mince pies as dessert (I know I shouldn't). I haven't had any now for 2 days and have been good with my food. Trouble is my blood sugar is 200+ and at best in the high 100's. I upped the insulin for the past 3 evenings to 12 and tonight will up it again to 14 but has anyone been here before?

Hi Ziggy,

I'm not surprised you were taken off the Diamicron because that is glicazide and you shouldn't take a sulphonylurea like glicazide together with metformin and insulin. To convert your mg/dl measurements to the mmol/L that we understand over here, just divide by 18. Your 200 mg/dl equates to 11.1 mmol/L, which is high but not earth shatteringly so. Like you I pigged a bit yesterday on a rich dessert and my BS this morning was 277 (15.4 mmol/L). Unfortunately I can't bring it down rapidly as I am not on insulin, so I will just stick to low carbohydrates for a couple of days until it normalises.

When your doctor told you 10 to 20 units, did he give any instruction on what situation you would need to increase the dosage and how much to increase it by? If you are intending to up it to 12 tonight then presumably you have been on 10 so far?

Hi Dennis, I have been taking 10 units of insulin just before I go to bed. The doc told me to increase it to 12 if my reading was 140+ for 3 days. I did this for 3 days but the reading was still high so I upped it last night to 14. This morning the reading was 149 so it is heading in the right direction. I'm very new to the insulin so I'm being very cautious with it. Thanks for the info in Diamicron, I didn't know this.
