Does anyone know if i can inject myself with another dose of insulin to bring down my sugar levels? Im on novamix 30 and have been since october 2012, currently injecting 12 in morning and 8 at night, im exercising quite hard and have no problems with sugar levels on those days but when i have been taking it easy my sugar levels rise in afternoon to plus 20s..last night i was 29 at 10.30pm and decided to inject a dose of 8, this did bring down my readings, to the point i had to eat something before going to bed..Its happening today again and im peeing a lot too, have phoned the elsie bartram diabetes clinic but they wont offer me any advice until they have received the letter from my doctor?? I only want advice untill my appointment is recieved. It is annoying as i have gained 2 stone in the last couple of months, from ten stone now up to 12 stone through weight training and nutrition and now i seem to be burning it all off again..Thanks for reading

Hi

I too used twice daily insulins many years ago but didn't really have that much of a problem as I always made sure that I kept within my carbohydrate allowance at set meal times. If you are going really high after you eat food, then you need to alter the amount of food that you eat to prevent it or inject a tiny bit more insulin before your meal to deal with eating more carb than you should.

Unless I am wrong, I would think that the dsn or GP would have given you a diet sheet listing the amounts of carb that you should eat at set meal times - like 'little and often'. You do unfortunately, need to count the carb that you are eating.

As you have found out through giving yourself a bit more insulin as a correction, it doesn't work straight away like bolus insulin, but takes about 2hrs and then combined with the rest of the insulin you injected prior, your bg levels will fall and this is what made you need to eat some more carb to prevent a hypo. Insulin and food can cause some degree of weightgain so that is why its important to get the balance correct so the insulin works correctly.

You will get there with trial and error.... just don't overdo the carb that you eat.
