i am currently looking after my brother whilst my parents are away.he is type 1 and also has Down syndrome.he is recovering from chest infection.his levels have crept up.i have been giving him extra insulin but it's not working...help!

No one on here is qualified to give medical advice. If you are concerned about your brother and unsure what to do, call 111 for non-emergency medical advice on the NHS.

It is likely the infection is pushing his blood sugar up. How high is it? Can you test for ketones? Are you familiar with sick day rules? I'm sure your parents are - can you get in touch with them for advice?

Yes I realise noone can give medical advice.just wondered if anyone out there had any advice to help out until tomorrow, he seems OK in himself etc just worried about his levels.will keep an eye over night and see what happens.cant get hold of mum and dad as they are at sea.thanks though

Do you know what his correction factor is? I.e how much 1unit would usually bring his blood sugar down by?

In fact, sorry, what insulin regime is he on? Basal/bolus or a mixed insulin?
