Hi I am type diabetic .
My blood sugars have been really high up at like 20s the past few days .. I was on a tablet to stop my heavy periods and noticed they was higher then and I’ve also got a big boil appeared (I am prone to these in my groin area and under arms and I do find my sugars go higher when have boil infections)

does anyone else experience this when infections? I am also really bad with hayfever at moment and runny nose etc could this also cause high blood sugars ?

I have checked my ketones on my monitor and they are 0.2 so that’s fine. I have been taking extra insulin too but still struggling to get the levels down .

Thanks in advance

Hi there Nicki - You're having a rough time at the moment.

The infection from your boil, and also your hayfever could be impacting your bloods. Well done for keeping an eye on your ketones.

Are you receiving treatment for your boil or hayfever? Have you had any diagnosis around your recurrent boils? How are your blood sugars usually?

I know it’s been pretty awful being as high as what and usually if I am higher they come down with the extra insulin but it must be a combination of the boils and hayfever as I’ve been really bad with it this year. And runny nose and itchy throat etc. I have been prescribed loratadine for hayfever too and beconase nasal spray. I do find if I have cold or any sort of infection my sugars always seem to increase. I’ve upped my background insulin too. I have just started a diet as I have put on a lot of weight since having my little girl too so hoping that might help overall.

I got flucloxacillin today from the doctors for my boil so have just started them today. That’s what they usually give me . I’ve been back and fore a lot in the past with them
And they mentioned a name that I can’t remember what it’s called but they said it could be that and just give me antibiotics to treat.

I seem to go through stages with my blood sugars, sometimes I am really good under 10 then next time I struggle to get them. My diabetic app was cancelled because of COVID so I’ve no clue what my hba1c is at moment.
I just hate when my sugars are as high as this.

Hi again Vicki - Was the name they gave your boils "hidradenitis suppurativa"? I really don't envy you one bit, dealing with boil after boil.

To be clear, this next bit is speculation on my part, but I wonder if you are the victim of almost perfect storm, leading to those high numbers - maybe some hormonal issues, the boil and hayfever all just stacking in a the same time?

I wouldn't suggest how you tackle those numbers as I'm not an insulin user, or T1, so have no personal wisdom in that regard, but hopefully a T1 might have some thoughts soon.

In the meantime, along with your insulin, I imagine drinking plenty fluids to encourage the glucose to be washed out of your could be useful.

What sort of diet have you started? Is it very different from your previous/usual way of eating?
