High bloods after low carb breakfast

I’m on holiday in Italy. I woke up with bloods at 10.0 - I took 2 units of insulin as well as my usual morning Levemir. I then went to the buffet breakfast, and had, what I thought, was a very low carb brekky of meat (salami, ham, turkey) and cheese, with a milky coffee. I then tested my blood at midday and it’s in the high teens! can anyone shed any light on why this has happened?
Thanks in advance.

Hello, did you factor in the morning liver dump, the coffee - milk needs some insulin in comparison to plant based milk like soy and some have experienced the effects of coffee can raise bg level, and protein - again some have experienced they needed some insulin for protein.
Any possibilities it could be a bad patch of insulin? Are you keeping your insulin cool? Have you checked again to see if it came down yet? I’ve experienced I would shoot up during breakfast and it would slowly come down in time. Bearing in mind that we need to give time for fast acting insulin to work before rage bolusing again.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah maybe it had something to do with the Hugh protein high fat meats, potentially could of affected absorption? And you’re right, the coffee could of been a factor, as I was from a machine and a didn’t check what kind of milk it was using. Thanks for your help and advice.

If it’s coffee from a machine, there might be sugar in the milk powder. I heard higher fat cuts of meat can have an affect on bg readings so possibly slower absorption. I hope your bg is okay now.

Hi,
As I see your food contained a lot of fats and protein. I've read that about 75g of pure protein does not require insulin, but more - does, of course, it's so individual. And probably you've eaten some carbs as well (in milk for example, however, I often drink coffee with milk without any effect on my BGs).
