Help I cant seem to get my sugar levels down I am on Metformin / Gliclazide / proglitazone & injecting Lixisenatide. & my reading are still in the teens Last night was 12. 3
my first one this am was 14.5. I am at my witts end I can see them putting me on insulin when I go to clinic on the 20th .
 
Hi Saphie, welcome and sorry you are having problems. What sort of diet are you on?
 
 
I have never been given an actual diet, I was refered to the diabetic clinic at the hospital in January by GP as they were unable to bring it down
they put me on the injections & were referring me to dietitian but still waiting for that lol. been T2 for about 15 years. x
 
Thank you Bluetit typical day is breakfast cup of tea x2 no sugar etc 2 slices of wholemeal toast, Aprox 11 am cappuccino
lunch cuppa soup or 2 crumpets. or jacket pot. cup of tea. tea.salad with egg/ ham /cheese etc. or fish with pots & veg. sometimes before bed a packet of crisps with a cup of tea .I suffer with a very dry mouth so I snack on grapes. or cherries x
 
Hi. A low-carb diet is very important to help control high blood sugar. bread is not good so I would only have 1 slice of toast. I hope the cappuccino has no sugar and be aware that if you have a lot of milk it does contain sugar; also watch out for chocolate unless Dark. Potatoes are not ideal so don't have too many. Commercial soups usually contain loads of sugar & starch so look at the labels. So, your diet isn't too bad but do watch out for the carby foods. BTW are you overweight?
 
Saphie, the toast, crumpets, potatoes and crisps would be a major factor here if this is a typical day, all are high carb and anathema to diabetics - the meds will help but they are fighting a losing battle if you don't reduce your carb intake.

You do need some dietary help here.

Your foods that are not good for blood sugars are:

Cappucino possibly (milk content)
Cuppa soup (check the sugar content on the container)
Crumpets
jacket potato
potatoes
crisps
grapes and too many cherries (try berries like raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries with plain yogurt or cream)

PS you will realise that this is contrary to standard NHS advice which is, frankly, wrong.
 
Thank You Yes I am overweight & am trying to loose at the moment, does the fruit affect bloods ? as when I saw gp she said only 1 piece of fruit a day.
I stay away from chocolate but do have the little boxes of Ricola sugar free sweets. I will cut down on the tea & swap for herbal teas. I am unable to do a lot of exercise due to disability The doctor at the diabetic clinic also noticed I have hormone problems so they are trying to sort that out .x
 
WOW I am going to have to try & completely change my diet , & try to find low carb meals. the sugar isn't a problem. I didn't realise it was in milk
Breakfast will be my problem finding an alternative to toast lol x
 
I was also a toast fiend, but now only have a small slice of wholemeal every other day or so with eggs for breakfast. I thought it would be impossible to cut it out but with LCHF I found it surprisingly easy. My breakfast alternatives include:

The diabetic Full English - choose from bacon, egg, mushrooms, tomato. Sausage if it's good quality and not loaded with cereal.
Full fat Greek yoghurt with some berries and a sprinkle of coconut.
Tea with a dash of milk or coffee with cream.
 
Thank you I will try scrambled eggs tomorrow I have plenty of them, I will pass on the bacon etc deff. no more crumpets just checked & gone up to 19.6
who would have thought they would do so much damage. hoping when I go to the hospital on the 20th they will remember I was supposed to see dietitian January lol x
