High bloods

Hi

I am a parent with a 15 year old son who was diagnosed with type 1 in February, so far we have managed fine but the last few days his bloods have been high we have been trying to correct them with insulin but it doesn't seem to be making any difference . His bloods normally sit around 6 but have been between 12 and 24 could anybody kindly give me any advice as what to do as I am stumped

Any help would be appreciatedappreciated

he says he feels a bit unwell and has a headache and really tired
 
Have you checked his insulin pen? There may be a problem with either the pen, or the insulin itself. Try shooting a couple of units into the sink to make sure it's functioning correctly. If it is, try changing the insulin cartridge as well.

Hi thanks for your response we have done both of those he is using a new pen it goes down by 2 but then goes back up within the hour totally confused
 
Do you have a blood ketone meter or urine ketone strips? If he is unwell with high BG that is not responding well to insulin, you should check for ketones and watch for the symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If he has DKA then you are probably going to have to take him to A&E unless you can manage it effectively at home.

But for starters, apply the Sick Day Rules. Did you get training / education on these?
