Hi all.

I'm newly diagnosed diabetic as of last week so I'm still trying to get my head around things. I have an appointment in the morning with the community diabetes lady though. I had a blood test on Tuesday because my vision went blurry last Sunday, the hospital phoned me at 10.30pm telling me to go there now. It was reading 22 but that was the morning. After I'd gone to the hospital it was over 26. If they phoned me quite concerned about a bm of 22, should I start worrying now that it's over 19? I have 16 units of the Abasaglar to have now, so would that help lower it enough? Is there something I should eat or do?

Do you have the means to test for ketones, @JoGO? If you do, have you done that, and what was that score?

I'll tag my colleagues, @Jaylee and @himtoo whom I believe could be around. Hopefully they'll have some wise words for you.

hi there -- for now just take the dose you have been told -- drink plenty of water and get back to doctor tomorrow -- if you are 19 now that is a bit better and overnight with that insulin on board should see you maintain similar levels

if overnight you test and get higher readings i would ring 111 for further advice

Hi @JoGo13 ,

Welcome to,the forum.

Are you prescribed any other diabetes medications other than Absagular?

Hi
Sorry about your diagnosis. Someone should be along shortly with the info download, but briefly to stop you worrying.

You insulin is a long acting one, those 16units will act over the next 24 hours, so won't suddenly change your blood glucose down. The hospital were worried because long periods of time with high blood glucose (weeks, months) can cause permanent damage. One day at 22 should not cause irreparable damage, but should be avoided if possible.

For goodness sake don't eat. Almost any food will increase your blood glucose.

If you're seeing a community nurse in the morning, I would recommend trying to relax and go to sleep. You might want to spend a little time before seeing the nurse writing down any and all questions that come to you, it's so easy to get overwhelmed when face to face, and she should have a large amount of information to go through.
