Have you tested your ketones? If your ketone levels are low then 'all' you need to do is get the blood sugar down.

This next bit applies to me, and will probably horrify many type ones.
The first thing I'd do is bolus 150u insulin. Test again in an hour. If I'm at 28, 27 I leave it for another hour. If I'm still at 30, I'd bolus another 150u. THIS IS DANGEROUS. What you are doing is stacking the insulin, so there is a much stronger peak over a slightly longer time. The blood glucose drops faster, but you have a higher risk of a nastily persistent hypo.

To go from 30 down to 10, I'd fully expect to have to use 400u of insulin. If you apply it all at once at the first test though, I'd need as much as 550u. I don't know if you've realised or been told, but as your blood glucose readings go down, you need less insulin to reduce blood glucose by the same amount.

You really need a discussion about bolus/basal doses with a good nurse or doctor. Waking up at 30 could mean your basal is wrong, or it could mean you have a really strong dawn phenomenon. The easiest way to distinguish the two would be to try a 24hr blood glucose monitor, again, you need to talk to your diabetes team.

Can you write down exactly everything you eat (including the amounts) for a week so everyone can take a look at it?
I suffer with almost a kind of denial, that I eat fairly well and I feel I excercise a lot, however my idea of a lot is much different to my friends as he pointed out recently and honestly I got a big shock.

The biggest problem for me is not only what I eat, but also how much of it I eat. I am very surprised that with your blood sugar that high, you are not ravenous with hunger.... I find when my blood readings are up that I am almost in a state of permanent hunger.

I wish you the best and feel your pain, try and do a bit more exercise and get your heart going, I've found that it does help me get my sugars down.

Also out of interest, what is your weight and height (That is if you don't mind posting of course).

You sound a bit stressed, it is the past. There are side effects with all medications. Most drugs will have that. There are recommendations and precautionary guidelines on the patient information sheet. Let your doctor know if any side effects start to happen. It's overwhelming when there are a lot of changes at the same time.
