I have been prescribed 3000 Metformin per day, I wonder on reading other people's dosage whether I'm on a rather high dose. I mentioned this to the nurse on last examination and she said that 3000 was the smallest dose if it was being used properly. Are there any comments. My fasting glucose level is usually between 5 and 6.9.
My maximum dose of Metformin was 2500mg and then I was moved onto Januvia as well. A lot of expert sites seems to indicate that there is little or no effect after 2000-2500mg. You could check the manufacturers site as well.
HI. I think 3000mg may exceed the stated max dose. If I were you I would check with the local pharmacy, look at the leaflet with tablets or Google it. Most people are on 2000mg max which is what I was on. It's the law of diminishing returns with metformin. Moving from 1000mg to 2000mg doesn't have the same effect as starting at 1000mg. Metformin helps most for those who have excess weight. If you have a good low-carb diet you may not even need any Metformin. BTW don't rely on your fasting blood sugar level. Testing 2 hours after typical meals is better and needs to be below 8.5 mmol to avoid medication.
