Hi. I'm 44, male, thought I ate a decent diet, exercise 5 times a week and have about 13% body fat and a BMI of 20. I have no close family history of diabetes. I had a fasting blood glucose level of 6.3 (confirmed at my doctors) and they have undertaken the HBc1a (or whatever it's called) and I'm waiting for the results. What I don't understand is that according to the symptom checker, I have none of the risk factors associated with diabetes or pre-diabetes. I only did the test to rule diabetes out as I was getting persistent thrush (and the website mentioned diabetes as a possible underlying factor). I'm confused and a bit angry because, without wanting to sound pious, I pay a lot of attention to health and lifestyle. I only drink about 10 units of alcohol per week. Any thoughts?

That reading alone doesn't mean you have Diabetes.... but if you have recurring thrush it may be that your body is not handling sugar/glucose well. A lot of people are glucose intolerant but not diabetic or even pre-diabetic.
You could very easily benefit from reducing your sugar intake. I had the same problem years ago... and I took the same action.
I personally doubt that your HbA1c result will be in the diabetic range but go forward from that when you have the result.
Thrush can be due to a yeast intolerance too. Mine came from eating too many mushrooms....
Don't fret, will you. You've done well to lead a healthy life hitherto.

Well, on the basis on one fasting test you seem to have ruled out diabetes but I am a little puzzled. Why did your doctor ask you to take a fasting test in the first place. Did he suspect diabetes?

Thanks for replying to my thread. I bought a home kit because I wanted to rule it out as a causal factor in persistent thrush. I did a reading this morning at home using the home kit before breakfast and got 6.4. That alarmed me so i went to the medical centre and got the nurse to repeat the test with, more or less, the same result 6.3. There was no suspicion from the doctor. It was me that initiated it.

I think it#s very good of your Doc to arrange a A1c test under the circumstances....
