High morning BG levels

I was diagnosed in December 2021 with a hba1c of 98. I’m on metformin 3 times a day and I am eating a low carb diet. My morning BG levels I feel are still too high they range from 8-10. After breakfast they are usually around 1.5-2 up from the morning level and continue to drop in the day quite often after dinner and tea they will be down from the level before eating or only raised by 0.5. I haven’t been given any target levels so unsure if this is going in the right direction. My lowest reading had been 5.9 but typically I hover around 7. Has anyone any advice as to what I can do to lower my morning BG levels?

Hi there

Definitely sounds like things are going in the right direction. I wouldn’t worry too much about your morning levels. The liver has a habit of chucking out glucose early on to prepare the body for the day - have a Google or search of this site for ‘Dawn phenomenon’. That morning reading is often the last one to come down and from what you say about your other readings it looks like you’re doing a great job.

It's taken all of your life to get to that HbA1c of 98, you are not going to fix this in a couple of months. As already mentioned you are doing really well, just keep doing the right things and eventually your morning levels should come down. Although even after around 8 years of low carb my morning levels are often the highest I see throughout the day. There's not a lot you can do to influence your fasting levels, your liver will gift you stored glucose wether you want it or not.
