Dear All,

I am Undiagnosed and a 23 year old asian male with bmi of 22

I am concerned about my blood sugar after dinner last night.

2 weeks ago i had my routine blood test, My Hba1c is 5.3% as of 2 weeks ago.

Usually i try to cut down on carbs at dinner so i don't go to sleep with blood sugar above 5.6 mmol/l.
Yesterday night i really let myself go and had a huge dinner full of carbs. I had 2 lamb chops,
a bowl of refined grain rice, a slice of pie, Sauteed potatoes, half a cob of corn and some sweet tea.

40 minutes after dinner i got curious and went to take my BS readings. It read 9.0 mmol/l,
at this point i was panicking and immediately washed my heads to redo the tests 3 more times.

So to summarize

At 40 Minutes after dinner:
9.0 mmol/l
After Washing Hand
8.0 mmol/l

At 50 Minutes After DInner:
7.8 and then 7.7

At this point i ran out of test strips and drove to my nearby mall to get some more.
I came back and tested at the 2 hour mark.

At 2 Hour Mark:
7.7 mmol/l

At this point I panicked again and decided to immediately wash my hands and try a clean hand towel to dry my hands.
The old towel has been used for 4 weeks to dry my hand before blood tests.

So After Using clean hand towel i Tested 3 more times:
6.5 mmol/l
6.2 mmol/l
6.3 mmol/l

Then i went to the gym to workout and came back to test at 5.0 mmol/l before i went to sleep

This morning i woke up at 4.6 mmol/l

I am really worried about the 9.0 and 8.0 readings at 40 minutes, could a non-diabetic person spike to such levels after a carb binge?
Could my old towel have caused false high readings at my 2 hour mark?

I know i sound a bit too anxious, but should i listen to my Hba1c or is this series of tests indicative of something else?

Looks like that was a bad reading (the 9 mmol/l) and your A1c is in normal range. A spike >7,8 mmol/l is considered (by most standards) in the diabetic range. Given you're 22 and have a normal BMI I wouldn't worry. It's rather strange you're obsessing with your blood sugar when it doesn't seem you're a diabetic...

Thank You for your response,

a year ago as a college boy living abroad, i had very bad lifestyle choices and horrible diet. My father was a type 2 diabetic.
Both these factors led to me become quite sensitive to the whole blood sugar issue. I am trying to exercise and diet my way to a healthier a1c level, but sometimes it is hard to kick old habits and our asian love of rice and all things carbs.

My answer to the first question is yes, that spike at that time after eating that food was perfectly normal. Your body is doing absolutely the right thing with insulin and metabolism.

To the second question, yes you should listen to your HbA1c and no these tests do not indicate any problem.
